Did we dwell in peace during the summer retreat? Were you not afflicted by begging? Without monks, we dwelt in peace in the region, so we observed the summer retreat, and we were not afflicted by begging. Although it was so, we had fights, exposed each other's faults, had quarrels, and debates during the summer, and we entrusted the dispute to the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, and they pacified the dispute with the teacher's doctrine and discipline. The Blessed One thought: Alas! My solitary dwelling hearers are able to pacify the disputes that arise and occur with the teacher's doctrine and discipline. Therefore, monks, the solitary dwelling monks should pacify the disputes that arise and occur with the teacher's doctrine and discipline. The monks did not know who the solitary dwellers were, and the Blessed One said: Those who can pacify the disputes that arise and occur without relying on the Sangha. There are three kinds: the solitary dweller, who is neither restrained in body nor in speech; one who is restrained in body but not in speech; and one who is restrained in both body and speech. Who is the one who is neither restrained in body nor in speech? For example, a solitary dwelling monk has a fight, exposes faults, has a quarrel, and a debate, and then goes to the presence of those who are in one side and another, and says: Venerable ones, well done! This dispute is well held, not wrongly held; it is well joined, not wrongly joined; it is well examined, not wrongly examined, so say this and this, do not say this and this. Venerable ones, defeat the opponents! The opponents are the place to be defeated. I am the ally, army, and friend of the venerable ones. And going to the other side, he also says: Venerable ones, well done! This dispute is well held, not wrongly held; it is well joined, not wrongly joined; it is well examined, not wrongly
