He declared extensively what the four noble truths are, namely suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, while sitting on that very seat, realized the four noble truths, namely suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. Just as a clean, spotless cloth, suitable for dyeing, when placed in dye, can be well and thoroughly dyed, so too, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, while sitting on that very seat, realized the four noble truths, namely suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, having seen the Dharma, attained the Dharma, understood the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended uncertainty, no longer relying on others for the Teacher's teachings, not being led by others, and having obtained fearlessness in the face of all phenomena, arose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed towards where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, I have attained, I have manifestly attained. Blessed One, I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha of monks; please accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, I will rely on refuge even at the cost of my life, with manifest faith. Then, the Blessed One said to the householder Anāthapiṇḍada: Householder, what is your name? Venerable sir, my name is Sudatta, but because I give alms to those who have no protectors, people call me Anāthapiṇḍada. Householder, where do you reside? Venerable sir, I reside in a place called Phrācīna, in the city of Śrāvastī in the country of Kosala. Blessed One, please go to Śrāvastī, and together with the Saṅgha of monks, I will, for as long as I live, attend to you with robes, alms food, bedding, and medicine for the sick. Householder, Śrāvastī

Is there a monastery here? There are no monks. The householder thought that wherever there is a monastery, monks will come, go, and stay. O Blessed One, please depart, and I will certainly build a monastery in Shravasti so that monks may come, go, and reside there. The Blessed One said nothing, thus granting permission to the householder Anathapindika. Then, the householder Anathapindika, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant consent, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and departed from the Blessed One's presence. Then, he attended to his affairs in Rajagriha, completing all the necessary tasks, and returned to where the Blessed One was. Upon arriving, he bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and said to the Blessed One: O Blessed One, please grant me a bhikkhu as a friend. I will build a monastery in Shravasti for the Blessed One together with him. The Blessed One considered, which bhikkhu would be able to tame the householder Anathapindika and his retinue, as well as the assembly of beings residing in Shravasti? He saw that the Venerable Shariputra would be able to tame them. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, consider the householder Anathapindika and his retinue, as well as the assembly of beings residing in Shravasti. The Venerable Shariputra said nothing to the Blessed One, but listened to the Blessed One's command. Then, the householder Anathapindika, knowing that the Venerable Shariputra's silence meant acceptance, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and departed from the Blessed One's presence. Then, the Venerable Shariputra, after that very night had passed, in the morning put on his lower garment, donned his robes, and carrying his alms bowl, entered Rajagriha for alms. After collecting alms in Rajagriha and finishing the meal, he abandoned further alms-seeking, tidied up his dwelling as usual, and taking his alms bowl and robes, set out walking towards where Shravasti was.

Then, the householder Anathapindika, carrying much provisions for the journey, went night after night to Shravasti. As he had not yet entered Shravasti, he inspected from garden to garden, from forest to forest, from grove to grove, from promenade to promenade, and said: Where is the place that is neither too far nor too near Shravasti, with little noise and little clamor during the day, quiet at night, with little sound, and little contact with mosquitoes, gadflies, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes? There I will build a monastery for the Blessed One. The householder Anathapindika saw that the grove of the young Jeta was neither too far nor too near Shravasti, with little noise and little clamor during the day, quiet at night, with little sound, and little contact with mosquitoes, gadflies, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes. Having seen it, he thought: Here I will build a monastery for the Blessed One. Thinking this, he did not return to his own house, but went directly to where the young Jeta was, and said to the young Jeta: Young man, please give me the grove! There I will build a monastery for the Blessed One. He said: Householder, that is not my grove, although it is a garden, it is mine. Two or three times, the householder Anathapindika said to the young Jeta: Young man, please give me the garden! There I will build a monastery for the Blessed One. Householder, even if it is covered with gold, I will not give up that grove. Again, the householder Anathapindika said to the young Jeta: Young man, you have determined the price of the grove, measure it with gold! The grove is mine. Who will set the price? You set the price! The two of them set the price. They argued, saying, "It is not set," and then went to where the great men who belonged to the settlement of disputes were.
