and in the meantime, the four world guardians thought: "This householder Anāthapiṇḍika is about to build a monastery for the Blessed One, we should help him." Then, they manifested themselves as belonging to the great figures of judgment matters, and gathered for the need. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍika and the youth Jeta went to the presence of the people belonging to the great figures of judgment matters. The householder Anāthapiṇḍika explained the matter in detail to those belonging to the great figures of judgment matters. They said: "The youth has already estimated the price of Jetavana, fill it with gold. Jetavana belongs to the householder." He sat there without saying a word. The householder Anāthapiṇḍika loaded many gold on carts, loads, baskets, boxes, drums, oxen, and donkeys, and came and began to spread gold all over Prince Jeta's garden. Some places were left unspread because they were not covered. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍika thought about this matter and remained silent for a moment, thinking: "What is the treasure that is neither too little nor too much, that does not need to be hidden again after being spread in this unspread place?" The youth Jeta thought: "The householder Anāthapiṇḍika must be possessed by a demon, otherwise why would he give up so much wealth for Jetavana?" He felt regret and said to the householder Anāthapiṇḍika: "Householder, if you regret it, take the gold back. Jetavana is mine." "Youth, I do not regret it. However, I am thinking about this matter and remaining silent for a moment because I want to know what is the treasure that is neither too little nor too much, that does not need to be hidden again after being spread in this unspread place?" Then, the youth Jeta thought: "Alas! The Buddha, the Blessed One, is not unexcelled, and the Dharma he teaches is not unexcelled. Now this householder

Thinking that he would give away such a great pile of wealth for the sake of the monastery, he said to Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder: 'Householder, give me this unpaved land. There I will build a gatehouse for the Blessed One.' Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder, gave the land paved by the youth Jeta, and there the youth Jeta had a gatehouse built for the Blessed One. Then, when Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder, began to build a monastery for the Blessed One, the heretics gathered together, their minds filled with intense hatred. They went to where Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder, was and said: 'Householder, do not build a monastery for the ascetic Gautama! Why? Because we have divided the cities, the ascetic Gautama's is Rājagṛha, and ours is Śrāvastī.' He said: 'You have divided the cities, but you have not divided my wealth, so I will build a dharma abode for the one I most delight in.' They went to the king, and he was also defeated by Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder. The arrogant and babbling heretics said: 'Householder, we will not let you do as you please. Let the best of the ascetic Gautama's disciples come, and if his debate defeats us, then build the monastery.' He said: 'Very well, for now, let us test only the venerable Śāriputra.' Then Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder, went to where the venerable Śāriputra was, and when he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Śāriputra and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, Anāthapiṇḍika, the householder, said this to the venerable Śāriputra: 'Venerable Śāriputra, the heretics say this: "Householder, we will not let you do as you please. Let the best of the ascetic Gautama's disciples come, and if his debate defeats us, then build the monastery." What should I do about this?' The venerable...

The Venerable Shariputra thought: Do these beings have any roots of virtue, or do they not? After thinking this, he saw that they did. He also thought: On whom does it depend? He saw that it depended on himself alone. He further thought: Can they be tamed by these words alone? Or are there other words that can tame them? After thinking this, he saw that there were. He wondered: How long will it take to gather? He thought it would be seven days, and then he said: Householder, let it be done in this way, but let it be done on the seventh day. Then, the householder Anathapindika was delighted and joyful, and he went to where the non-Buddhists were. Upon arriving, he said to the non-Buddhists: Wise ones, Shariputra says that it can be done in this way, but it should be done on the seventh day. They thought: There must be two reasons for this. Either he wants to flee, or he wants to seek help. If that is not the case, why set it at that time? Let us also seek help. So they began to seek help, and as they were searching, they saw the wandering ascetic Red-Eyes. They said to him: You and we are practitioners of pure conduct. We have invited the best of the disciples of the ascetic Gautama for debate. Seek help for us, and be our friend. How long from now? On the seventh day from now. He said: Let it be done in this way. When you have gathered, invite me. The non-Buddhists were fearful and worried, and they searched for help and counted the days each day. How long until seven days are complete? The householder Anathapindika had seats arranged in a wide, open space without cover. He also prepared a lion throne for the Venerable Shariputra. Non-Buddhists from various regions also gathered. Crowds of people living in Shravasti and hundreds of thousands of beings living nearby also gathered, some out of wonder, and some driven by the roots of virtue from the past. Then, the Venerable Shariputra
