Giving from one. The Blessed One declared: "Both monasteries should be given half and half. A bhikkhu should not vow to reside in two monasteries. If he makes a vow, he will commit a serious offense." A householder had two monasteries built. One was for the monastery monks, and the other was for those on the edge of the village. The custom of that householder was to offer each bhikkhu of the summer retreat sangha a large cloth, so he took those large cloths and went to the monastery monks' monastery. Neda heard (the news) and (someone) said (the householder) would offer the gains in the monastery monks' monastery, so he sent a message to Delight saying: "If he offers these gains, take a share." After he said that, he hurried to the monastery monks' monastery. That householder saw him and thought: "Oh, judging from his gait, he has gone to the monastery monks' monastery. What should I do now?" He thought, "It would be better to offer it to the village edge monastery for the time being, and then offer it here later." So he returned and began to distribute the large cloths. Delight held out his hand, and that householder gave him a large cloth. He held out his hand again, and the householder said: "Venerable, I have already offered you a large cloth, what else do you want?" He said: "Householder, in your monastery, Neda receives his share in the summer." The householder said: "Venerable, the Blessed One praised giving from one's own hand, so I will only give from my own hand." He sat there ashamed and speechless. Neda thought: "If that householder is delayed today, (I) won't have to go to the edge of the village." Thinking this, he went to the village edge monastery and asked Delight: "Reverend, did you receive my large cloths?" Delight told him what had happened. The householder went to the monastery monks' monastery by another road, distributed the large cloths, and left. Neda ran back to the monastery monks' monastery again, but how many large cloths had already been distributed. He was particularly attached to the gains of the two monasteries, and because of losing the gains, he was sad, weary, and lamented.

The monks, having doubts, asked the Blessed One Buddha to dispel all doubts. The Blessed One observed that the monk Nanda had lost a precious cloth due to excessive attachment. The Blessed One said: Monks, not only now, but also in the past he lost food due to excessive attachment, listen to this. Monks, in the past there were two monasteries on either side of a river. One was the place of offerings for the Sangha, and the other was for the alms-gatherers. At that time, there was a dog that understood the sound of the ghanta (gཎྜཱི, घंटा, ghaṇṭā, bell). When it heard the sound of the ghanta, it would go to the monastery where the Sangha's offerings were. Some monks there would give it the leftovers from their bowls, and after eating that, it would go to the monastery of the alms-gatherers. It would also be happy to eat the leftovers from their bowls. Later, the alms-gatherers suddenly received an offering, and they rang the ghanta as before. The dog, hearing the sound of the ghanta, began to cross the river, and when it reached the middle, the ghanta of the monastery with the Sangha's offerings also rang. It felt unhappy and tried to return, but it was carried away by the current of the river and lost both sides. Monks, what do you think? The dog that understood the sound of the ghanta at that time was none other than this Nanda. Then, too, he lost both sides due to excessive attachment, and now he has lost both sides due to excessive attachment. Monks, therefore, a monk should not be excessively attached, for if he is, he will commit a grave offense. Explaining the basis of dwelling.
