The Basis of Dwellings The Basis of Dwellings Vinaya-vastu, Volume Seventy-Four. The summary of the basis of dwellings: the five groups who are not Shakya, and the person of the Sangha without protectors. For the sake of destroying property, and the connected land, and monasteries, Dharma robes, butter, and monasteries, the acquisition of elders, these eight are later. The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, many monks gathered and assembled in a place of veneration, and were discussing such topics as this: "Venerable ones, whom should we venerate? Whom should we regard as our teacher? Whom should we rely on? Whom should we make offerings to? To whom should we offer greetings, prostrations, rising, joining palms, and reverence? Who among us is worthy to enjoy the first seat, the first drink, the first alms?" Then some said this: "Whoever has gone forth from the Shakya clan." Some said this: "Whoever has gone forth from the Brahmin clan." Others said: "Whoever has gone forth from the Kshatriya clan." Others said: "Whoever has gone forth from the Vaishya clan." Others said: "Whoever has gone forth from the Shudra clan." Others said: "Whoever has gone forth from a noble clan that is not of a bad lineage, and whoever has gone forth from a wealthy clan that is not poor." Others said: "Whoever has a good appearance, is pleasing to look at, is beautiful, and has good speech, is skilled in speech, and is intelligent, has great merit, and is a holder of the Sutras, a holder of the Vinaya, a holder of the Matrikas, is learned, a speaker of Dharma, worthy to be an elder king, and a dweller in monasteries, and has three Dharma robes, and has a felt mat, and holds a fly-whisk, and is an alms-seeker, and does not choose alms, and is a one-session eater, and does not take food after eating, and dwells under trees, and dwells in cemeteries, and has no hiding place, and is a constant sitter, and dwells as it is, and has obtained the perception of impermanence, from this up to the Arhat who meditates on the eight liberations, as before.

Venerable ones, we are all like this: having examined individually, we have different opinions. Therefore, let us go together to where the Blessed One is, and report this matter to the Blessed One. Whatever the Blessed One prophesies, we will follow accordingly. Then, many monks went to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, many monks said this to the Blessed One: Venerable one, we many monks have gathered and assembled in this place of veneration, and we have been discussing such topics, and so on. Whatever the Blessed One prophesies, we will follow accordingly. Venerable one, we would like to report this matter to the Blessed One: whom should we venerate? Whom should we respect? Whom should we rely on? Whom should we make offerings to? And so on, even to the point of first enjoying alms-food, it is as before. The Blessed One said: Monks, you should venerate the eldest, respect, rely on, make offerings, greet them, bow, rise, join your palms, and perform the work of taming. That is, you should first enjoy the first seat, the first drink, and the first alms-food. The Blessed One said, monks, you should venerate the eldest, and so on, even to the point of first enjoying alms-food, as before. When the monks venerate, respect, rely on, and make offerings to the elderly householders, the Brahmins and wealthy householders scold, mock, and speak harsh words: Holy ones, we are those who indulge in desires, sinking in the mire of desires, why do you venerate us? The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, I spoke with the renunciates in mind, not referring to those in
