It is not for those. Monks, seeing other elderly non-Buddhists, they honor, respect, serve, and make offerings. The Blessed One said: Monks, I said this with regard to those of our religion, not to outsiders. They see elderly ordained novices, and they honor, respect, serve, and make offerings. The Blessed One said: Monks, I said this with regard to those who have taken full ordination, not to novices. They honor, respect, serve, and make offerings to newly fully ordained elders. The Blessed One said: Ask each other about the first year of ordination and then prostrate. When they asked and the other person spoke of their age, the Blessed One said: One should ask about the first year of full ordination. The monks did not know how to ask, and the Blessed One said: First, one should ask about the season. The monks did not know what the season was, and the Blessed One said: Monks, there are these five seasons: winter, cool season, summer, short summer, and long summer. Among them, four months are winter. Four months are the cool season. One month is summer. One day and night is short summer. Three months less one day is long summer. Having spoken of the season in this way, one should prostrate to the one who was fully ordained earlier. Monks, there are also four others to whom one should prostrate. Which four? First, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, to whom the world with its gods, demons, and Brahma, and the populace with its ascetics and Brahmins, and gods and humans, should prostrate; the ordained to whom all householders should prostrate; and all fully ordained should prostrate to the one who was fully ordained earlier. Except for nuns, even if she has been fully ordained for a hundred years, she should prostrate to the monk who was fully ordained today.

All those who have not taken full ordination should pay homage to those who have taken full ordination. There are ten who should not be paid homage to. What are these ten? Namely: those who have been expelled, those who have been expelled from the root, those who practice expulsion, those who should be pleased who practice, those who should be pleased who practice the Dharma, those who have been expelled from the Sangha without seeing, those who have been expelled from the Sangha without repenting, those who have fallen into evil views and have not abandoned them and have been expelled from the Sangha, all householders, and all those who have not taken full ordination. When the Blessed One established the rules for how to follow elders, the monks respected each other, regarded each other as teachers, remembered each other, and made offerings to each other. When they respected each other, regarded each other as teachers, remembered each other, and made offerings to each other, their virtuous qualities grew like lotuses in water. The monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, when you established the rules for how to follow elders, the monks respected each other, regarded each other as teachers, remembered each other, and made offerings to each other. When they respected each other, regarded each other as teachers, remembered each other, and made offerings to each other, they saw that their virtuous qualities grew like lotuses in water. The Blessed One said: Monks, now I am free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion, and I am all-knowing, all-knowing in all aspects, all-knowing, and have mastered all that is to be known. Therefore, I have established the rules for how to follow elders. Based on the practice of following elders, the monks respect each other, regard each other as teachers, and so on, up to the point of being like lotuses in water. What is so amazing about this? When I was not free from desire, not free from hatred, not free from delusion, not liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion, and with a fallen body, I established the rules for how to follow elders.

Then, listen, because of that elder, most of the beings living in Jambudvipa were born as glorious deities in the Thirty-three Heavens. Bhikshus, in the past, in a dense forest in the land of Kashmir, there lived four animals: a partridge, a rabbit, a monkey, and an elephant. They lived together in harmony, being mutually agreeable, truly happy, without quarrels, without doubts, and spending their time in joyful conduct. At some point, the thought arose in them: Wise ones, we live together in harmony, being mutually agreeable, truly happy, without quarrels, but we do not know whom we should respect, whom we should regard as our teacher, whom we should remember, and whom we should offer to. How should we treat the elder? They began to consult each other: Who among us is the eldest? Then, the partridge pointed to a banyan tree and said: Wise ones, who has seen how big this banyan tree is? The elephant said: When I was walking along this path with my herd, I only saw that the trunk of this tree was as big as my body. The monkey said: When I was walking along this path with my herd, I only saw that the trunk of this tree was as big as me. They said: Therefore, you are older. The rabbit said: When this tree had grown two leaves, I licked the dewdrop on the leaves with my tongue. They said: Therefore, you are also older than them. The partridge said: Have you seen the great form of this banyan tree? They said: We have seen it. I ate the seeds and then defecated here, and this is what grew from it. They said: If that is the case, then you are the eldest among all of us. Then, the elephant began to pay homage to all places. The monkey paid homage to the rabbit and the partridge. The rabbit only paid homage to the partridge. In this way, they respected each other according to their age, wandering around in that dense forest, whenever they needed to go to a hollow or a steep place
