thinking it was so and not appointing them, and they revile the newly arrived monks, mock them, and speak harshly to them: Venerable ones, are you now, while the Teacher himself is still present, going to destroy the Dharma? If you have regrets, give them lodging as you would to the old and infirm. When those were not appointed, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and regarding this event, the Blessed One taught: Therefore, it should be permitted that for the sake of the monks who fled in fear, they should vow to dwell in the second rainy season. The monks, not understanding, the Blessed One taught: The three-month retreat should be observed, and in the last month of the rainy season, they should vow to dwell in the later rainy season. After the Blessed One said that for the sake of the monks who fled in fear, they should vow to dwell in the second rainy season, how many other monks who fled in fear also arrived in Shravasti, at that time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught: Monks, the vow to dwell in the second rainy season that I established based on the monks who fled in fear, the third is not allowed. The monks who fled in fear should also be allowed to rest, just like those who need care. The monks were about to select and appoint them, and the Blessed One taught: Do not select and appoint them from among them. The monks gave them offerings, and the Blessed One taught: Do not give them offerings. The monks did not give offerings of food, and the Blessed One taught: Offerings of food may be given to them, but not offerings of clothing. Because the faithful had built many monasteries, in Shravasti only a few monks vowed to dwell in retreat, and those monasteries were empty, the patrons' enjoyment did not generate merit, and they became the dwellings of sparrows. The Blessed One taught: Everything should be distributed, and each person should enjoy two, three, or four rooms each, whatever is suitable, and some in the morning

One should dwell. Sometimes at noon, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes at night. The monks, not doing hand work, became weary. The Blessed One said: One should generate joy in the patrons. If it succeeds, that is good. If it does not succeed, the Sangha should repair it again. If it is not possible, one should repair as much as one can, and leave the rest aside. When the Blessed One's teachings flourished, many monks came to Shravasti. They were distressed by the lack of dwellings. The Blessed One said: It should be divided into two or three parts. Water vessels, clay, medicine, and toothpicks should be placed. Except for the ladders between them, even the smallest space to sit should be divided equally among all. The surrounding area is common and should not be divided. The Blessed One said to the monks: Meditate in these places: in solitary places, under trees, in empty houses, in mountain valleys, in caves, on grass mats, in places without shelter, in cemeteries, at the edge of forests, and in remote dwellings. Do not regret it later, be careful! The Blessed One praised solitary places many times. At that time, some monks vowed to live in solitary places and stayed there. But they were attacked by thieves there. After being attacked, they strived to seek Dharma robes in the houses of Brahmins and householders, so their hearing, reading, reciting, yoga, and attention were neglected. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Regarding this matter, the Blessed One said: A place should be set aside for the monks who live in solitary places. The Blessed One said: A place should be set aside for the monks who live in solitary places. The monks set it in an inconspicuous place. A monk living in a solitary place put down his bowl and Dharma robes, closed the door, took the key, and left. Other monks living in solitary places felt distressed. The Blessed One said: Monks, the place should be conspicuous.

The residence of the monastic community should be arranged. A householder named Neda had a monastery built. But he did not live there himself, but gave the residence to a bhikkhu who came by chance, and took the offerings for himself. Later, a bhikkhu wearing the three robes came, and seeing the monastery empty, he asked: Whose monastery is this? The bhikkhus said: It belongs to the bhikkhu Neda. He went to Neda and said contemptuously: I live in this monastery, and all the offerings are mine. He lived there, but he never swept the monastery, nor did he smear it with fresh cow dung. After a while, he left that monastery. Another bhikkhu came, and he also treated Neda with contempt and stayed in that monastery. He saw that the monastery was full of dust, so he swept the monastery and threw away the dust. He stood by the dust heap with the broom in his hand. At this time, another bhikkhu saw him and said: Venerable, what are you standing there with the broom in your hand? Why don't you put down the broom? He said: It seems that there are some guardians living here, so there is not even a trace of the broom. He said: A certain bhikkhu wearing the three robes lives here. After a while, he saw that person begging for alms and did not blame him. He said: The offerings were taken away by Neda, why should I sweep his monastery? At this time, the bhikkhus reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Whoever takes the offerings should sweep the monastery. The Blessed One said: The merits should be dedicated in the name of the deceased donors. When the elder of the Sangha recited verses for the dead, a householder came to the monastery, heard the sound of dedicating merits, went to the elder and said: Venerable, if I also build a monastery, will you also dedicate merits in my name? The elder said: Build it, and I will dedicate it well. After a while, that householder had a monastery built, but certainly, there was nothing there.
