Who is called the Sangha? Laypeople, even sons of good families from the Brahmin caste, the Jewish caste, and the common caste, who shave their hair and beards, don the ochre robes, and with pure faith alone, go forth from home to homelessness, following the Blessed One into the monastic life. This householder is called the Sangha. Tomorrow, I will invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to my house for a meal. Householder, where does the Blessed One reside now? He resides in the cool grove of the charnel ground in this very Rajagriha (city in Bihar). Householder, are we allowed to see the Blessed One? He said this: Householder, wait a moment, and if he comes here, there will be an opportunity to see him tomorrow. Then, the householder Anathapindika went to sleep that night with mindfulness focused on the Buddha. Before he awoke, mistaking it for dawn, he went to where the south gate was. At that time, the south gate was usually opened during the first and last watches of the night to allow messengers who came and went suddenly to pass unhindered. As soon as he saw the south gate open and illuminated by light, he thought to himself: Since the south gate is open like this, it must surely be dawn. So, in that very light, he went out of the city. But as soon as he came out, that light disappeared, and it became dark again. He became frightened, uneasy, and his hair stood on end, thinking: Will I be harmed by a human or a non-human, or some deceiver, and be robbed before I have even gained much merit? As he wanted to turn back, the god Honey Mound circumambulated his dwelling and prostrated. Then, the god Honey Mound thought: If Anathapindika sees the truth today, today he will abandon the Buddha, the Blessed One.

Then, thinking that he might worship other gods, he illuminated the space from the south gate to the charnel ground of the Cool Grove with great light, and said to the householder Anāthapiṇḍada: 'Householder, go forward! Do not turn back! It will be better for you to go forward, but not if you turn back.' Why is that? One hundred horses and one hundred gold ornaments, one hundred mule carts, and one hundred mare carts adorned with various jewels, one cannot afford to lose even one step, not even one-sixteenth of it. Householder, go forward! Do not turn back! It will be better for you to go forward, but not if you turn back.' Why is that? One hundred elephants from the snowy mountains, adorned with gold and jewels, large in body, with plowshare-like tusks, born in Matanga, of great strength, one cannot afford to lose even one step, not even one-sixteenth of it. Householder, go forward! Do not turn back! It will be better for you to go forward, but not if you turn back.' Why is that? One hundred daughters from the land of Tokhar, wearing jewel earrings and bracelets, wearing gold armlets, their necks well adorned with ornaments, one cannot afford to lose even one step, not even one-sixteenth of it. Householder, go forward! Do not turn back! It will be better for you to go forward, but not if you turn back.' Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada said to that deva: 'Fair-faced one, who are you?' Householder, 'I am your old friend, the Brahmin boy Madhupiṇḍa. I generated faith in the Venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, and having died, was born among the gods of the Four Great Kings, and I dwell permanently in this south gate. Therefore, I say this to you: Householder, go forward! Do not turn back! It will be better for you to go forward, but not if you turn back.' Vinayavastu, Volume Seventy-Five. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada thought: 'Alas! Is the Blessed One, the Buddha, not the most supreme?'

Therefore, the Buddha's teachings are not supreme, not so. Now the gods are also striving to practice. Thinking: We should go to see the Blessed One. So they went to the charnel ground in the cool forest. At that time, the Blessed One was walking outside the monastery, without cover, especially waiting for Anathapindika to arrive. Anathapindika saw the Blessed One from afar. After seeing him, he walked towards the place where the Blessed One was. The elder greeted the Blessed One with great joy and asked: Blessed One, do you sleep peacefully? Then, the Blessed One answered with a verse at that time: He who is not stained by desire, He who is without outflows and completely liberated, The Brahmin who has transcended sorrow, Sleeps peacefully at all times. Here, having cut off all hope, Having eliminated all diseases of the heart, He who has attained peace of mind, Sleeps peacefully in tranquility. After that, the Blessed One led Anathapindika into the monastery and sat down on the prepared seat. Anathapindika bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head and then sat aside. After sitting aside, the Blessed One gave a discourse to Anathapindika with words corresponding to the Dharma, causing him to believe and practice, causing him to rejoice, causing him to be extremely joyful. The initial Dharma teachings given by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are like this: teachings on generosity, teachings on ethics, teachings on rebirth in higher realms, and teachings on the smallness, faults, afflictions, purification, renunciation, and benefits of tranquility of desires, are widely proclaimed. When the Blessed One sees that he has a joyful mind, a virtuous mind, a contented mind, a stainless mind, and is able to understand the excellent Dharma that is being taught, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, will
