Let those leftovers remain here. Son, do you see the treasures in the water? Father, I see not only those in the water, but also those on land, those with owners, those without owners, those far away, and those nearby. The householder Giver, astonished, widened his eyes and thought: Only a master of such wealth can give alms! Realizing this, he said: Son, if that is so, give alms joyfully! This is the rule, as long as the father is alive, the son's fame will not appear. At some other time, the householder Giver died, and Good Giver became the master of the house. He always gave food to the helpless, and everyone said that the son of the householder Giver, Good Giver, had become the master of the house, and he gave food to the helpless, so his name became known as the Householder Helpless Food Giver, the Householder Helpless Food Giver. Then, he took a wife from the same caste, and he played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness together. He played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness, and she bore a son, up to the point where she bore seven sons. He established homes for six of them. The seventh, named Good Birth, could not find a wife from the same caste, so he rested his hand on his cheek and sat in contemplation. His friend, a Brahmin boy named Honey Heap, saw him so lost in thought and said: Householder, why are you resting your hand on your cheek and sitting in contemplation? He said: I have established homes for six sons, and I am wondering where to establish a home for the seventh, Good Birth. He said: Relax a little, and I will find a wife for him from the same caste. In what place? He said: For now, I will go to the land of Magadha. Do so. He went to Rajagriha, and in Rajagriha, there lived another wealthy householder, with much wealth and great enjoyment, similar to the Householder Helpless Food Giver, and he entered that householder's house.

Then he sat at the doorway and said, "May there be auspiciousness!" The person of that household said, "Brahmin, what do you want?" "I want a daughter." "For whom?" "For the son of Anathapindika, the householder in Shravasti, named Sudatta." Those people said, "Our lineage is the same, but we need a lot of wealth." "How much extra is needed?" One hundred elephants from the snowy mountains, one hundred horses, one hundred gold ornaments, one hundred mule carts, one hundred girls from the land of Tokhar, and a Brahmin boy with a mountain of honey. For that reason, the Brahmin boy sent a letter to Anathapindika, the householder, and he read it and sent a letter in reply saying, "Give them all!" He then chose an auspicious day and time, and after satisfying the Brahmin boy with clean and blessed food, he sent him to the house of a Brahmin to settle down. Because he had diarrhea and the Brahmins did not know him, they were afraid of him because he was unclean, so they threw him out and abandoned him. Coincidentally, the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were going in that direction and saw him. Then the two of them scraped him with bamboo shoots, smeared him with white earth, washed him, taught him the Dharma, and left. Because he could not bear the diarrhea, he developed faith in the two of them and was born among the gods of the retinue of Shib and the Four Great Kings. He went to the son of the Great King Vaishravana and asked for a place to stay, and he said, "Go and get a place at the south gate!" So he went there and settled down. The king of Lusheng sent one hundred elephants from the snowy mountains as a gift to King Rupakaya, and he sent a message to King Prasenajit of Kosala saying, "The king of Lusheng has sent me one hundred elephants from the snowy mountains as a gift. If you approve, please allow me to accept them." Then Anathapindika, the householder, went to where King Prasenajit of Kosala was, and after arriving, he said to King Prasenajit, "O King, I have a little business to do in Rajagriha, I will go there and return." The king said, "Good."

Go and then drive my hundred elephants that need to be taken. He said: O god, if I cannot find them there, I will take them, and if they are here, I will please the god. The king said: Good, do so. Then the householder Anathapindika took much food and went to Rajagriha. That householder in whose house he had settled, that householder arose that very night and instructed his household: Rise up, household members! Rise up, handsome ones! Bring the wood! Light the fire! Cook the rice! Cook the vegetables! Prepare the food well! Prepare the serving utensils! Then the householder Anathapindika thought to himself: Is this householder taking a bride? Or giving away a daughter? Or has he invited the villagers to a meal? Is it business? Is it a gathering? Is it a feast? Or has he invited the king of Magadha, Bimbisara, to a meal? Then he said to that householder: Householder, are you taking a bride? Or giving away a daughter? Or have you invited the villagers to a meal? Is it business? Is it a gathering? Is it a feast? Or have you invited the king of Magadha, Bimbisara, to a meal? He said: Householder, I am neither taking a bride nor giving away a daughter. I have not invited the villagers to a meal. It is not business. It is not a gathering. It is not a feast. I have not invited the king of Magadha, Bimbisara, to a meal. But I have invited the Sangha of monks, with the Buddha at their head, for a meal. When the householder Anathapindika heard the word "Buddha," which he had never heard before, all the pores of his skin bristled. Because his pores bristled, he said to that householder: Householder, who is this "Buddha"? Householder, it is the ascetic Gautama, the son of the Shakyas, who, from the Shakya clan, has shaved his hair and beard, put on saffron robes, and out of pure faith has gone forth from home to homelessness. He has attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and has become a Buddha. Householder, that is what is called the Buddha. Householder,
