Having seen the assembly of gods increase, the lord Indra, the hundred-eyed one, spoke in verse: With reverence and humility, those who dwell in the grove of difficult asceticism, the supreme conduct of Brahma, are greatly proclaimed in each world. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think of this? The supreme conduct of Brahma at that time and at that moment was none other than myself. The rabbit was the monk Śāriputra. The monkey was Maudgalyāyana's son. The elephant was Ānanda. At that time, what kind of elder's practice did I perform? By relying on the pleasure of old age, most of the beings dwelling in Jambudvīpa were born into the ranks of the thirty-three gods. Even now, what kind of elder's practice do I perform? By relying on that elder's practice, the monks respect one another, regard one another as teachers, remember one another, and make offerings to one another, and like a lotus in water, the virtuous Dharma grows. Monks, therefore, the elders, those in between, and the new ones who practice the same Brahma conduct should abide with respect, humility, and fear. Monks, why is that? If a monk does not respect the elders, those in between, and the new ones, and does not abide without humility and fear, then there is no place where the Dharma of universal practice will fully increase. If the Dharma of universal practice does not fully increase, there is no place where the Dharmas of learning will fully increase. If the Dharmas of learning do not fully increase, there is no place where the aggregates of morality, the aggregates of concentration, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and the aggregates of the vision of the knowledge of liberation will fully increase. If the aggregates of the vision of the knowledge of liberation do not fully increase, there is no place where one will completely pass beyond sorrow without taking hold. Monks, if a monk abides with respect, humility, and fear towards the elders, those in between, and the new ones who practice the same Brahma conduct, then the Dharma of universal practice

This is the place where complete development can occur. If the Dharma of universal practice is fully developed, this is the place where the Dharma of learning can be fully developed. If the Dharma of learning is fully developed, this is the place where the aggregates of morality, the aggregates of concentration, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and the aggregates of the vision of the knowledge of liberation can be fully developed. If the aggregates of the vision of the knowledge of liberation are fully developed, this is the place where one can be completely liberated from suffering without clinging. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: you should abide with respect and reverence, and with a sense of awe, towards the elders, the middle ones, and the newly ordained. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. When the Blessed One had tamed the group of five, they dwelt in the wilderness. When they dwelt in the wilderness, it became a place frequented by lions, tigers, bears, and thieves. The Blessed One thought: Where would it be suitable for the disciples of the Buddhas of the past, the perfectly enlightened ones, to dwell? He saw that it was a monastery. The gods also requested the Blessed One in the same way. At that time, there lived in Varanasi a householder named Kalyāṇamitra, who, being stirred in his heart by the roots of virtue, thought thus: Alas! I should build a monastery for the disciples of the Blessed One. Then, rising early the next morning, he went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. As he sat on one side, the Blessed One instructed the householder Kalyāṇamitra with Dharma-related talk, causing him to rightly grasp it, causing him to be uplifted, causing him to be greatly pleased. In various ways, he taught him rightly with Dharma-related talk, caused him to rightly grasp it, caused him to be uplifted, caused him to be greatly pleased, and then he remained silent. Then the householder Kalyāṇamitra rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and went to where the Blessed One was.
