There was a wealthy man who took a wife from the same caste. He played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed happiness with her. He played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed happiness with her, after which the wife became pregnant. After eight or nine months, when the star was Revati (Tibetan: རྒྱུ་སྐར་ཆུ་སྟོད།), a boy was born. His relatives gathered together and held a grand celebration of the birth for twenty-one days, and they were going to give the child a name. What name should they give the boy? They thought, "This boy was born when the star was Revati, so the boy's name should be Revati." So, they named him Revati. They nourished him with milk, yogurt, white butter, clarified butter, the essence of butter, and other various essential foods. They raised him quickly like a lotus in a pond. When he grew up, he began to study letters, numbers, arithmetic, manual calculation, subtraction, addition, and placement. He became proficient in letters, able to distinguish, read, master, clearly apply, and he became skilled in the eight types of divination. These eight are: divination of jewels, divination of cloths, divination of land, divination of trees, divination of elephants, divination of horses, divination of women, and divination of men. Not long after, his father died, and Revati became the master of the house. He displayed goods for buying and selling in the shop and made a living through trade. At another time, he went before the Blessed One (Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།). He saw the Blessed One and heard the sacred Dharma, and faith arose in the teachings of the Blessed One. Because faith arose, he desired to renounce. So, he went to his mother and said, "Mother, please know that I wish to renounce in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya." The mother said, "You are my only son, so do not renounce as long as I am alive. After I die, do whatever you please." He said, "Mother, if you can make a vow, I will not renounce. If you every day...

Then, the monks appointed by the Sangha requested the offering of umbrellas. He said, "Child, let it be done." Sudatta also handed over all the little he had accumulated to his mother, saying, "Mother, please give to the Shramanas and Brahmins!" His mother was a miser, very stingy. Because of her attachment to possessions, she had no interest in even offering torma to crows, let alone giving to Shramanas and Brahmins. To those Shramanas and Brahmins who entered her house for alms, she would say, "You are like hungry ghosts, always coming to other people's houses to beg." She also deceived her son, saying, "Today I have offered umbrellas to so many monks, and I have offered alms to so many Shramanas and Brahmins." Because she was accustomed to stinginess and did this many times, she was reborn as a hungry ghost after death. After Sudatta left his mother, he gave alms, made merit, and then renounced in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya. At another time, he was living in the Mango Grove, and because he was living in the Mango Grove, the householder Krishna, who lived in the Mango Grove, developed faith in the teachings of the Blessed One. He especially revered the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and became a support for the monks who came to the Mango Grove from various places. After some time, the venerable Sudatta went to another mountain pass because of some business. The venerable Gāndharīputra Nyagrodha, with five hundred attendants, was traveling through the country and went to the Mango Grove. The householder Krishna heard that the venerable Gāndharīputra Nyagrodha, with five hundred attendants, was traveling through the country and had come here. Having heard this, he went to where the venerable Nyagrodha was. When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of Nyagrodha and sat down to one side. After sitting down to one side, the venerable Nyagrodha instructed, convinced, uplifted, and delighted the householder Krishna with Dharma-related talks. In many ways, with Dharma-related talks,
