Thus I have heard. Once the Blessed One was dwelling at Savatthi in Jeta’s Grove, Anathapindika’s Park. Then the Blessed One having gone there, the monks of Kausambi and the monks of Vriji became such in their conduct that in the morning they went for alms for food, and after the meal they closed the doors and engaged in fighting. They spent twelve years in this improper conduct. The Brahmins and householders of Kausambi gathered in the assembly hall and began to discuss with each other: "Wise ones, we are very devoted to offering the Blessed One food, clothing, bedding, medicine for sickness, and utensils. However, the Blessed One has abandoned this place for twelve years and has not yet returned." Some said: "Wise ones, how could the Blessed One come here? Now the monks of Kausambi are behaving in this way: in the morning they go for alms for food, and after the meal they close the doors and engage in fighting." Some said: "Wise ones, it is not that they are at fault, but rather that we have given them food or spoken words. Let us make a rule that no one will give them alms or speak to them." So they made such a rule. Then the next day, when the monks of Kausambi went for alms, no one spoke to them or gave them alms. Just as they went for alms with their bowls washed, so they returned empty-handed, having found nothing. Then they gathered together and said to the Brahmins and householders of Kausambi: "Wise ones, if it is because you are temporarily out of money that you do not give alms, that is understandable. But what wrong have we done that you do not even speak to us?" They said: "Because you are behaving improperly, the Teacher is displeased and has descended from the sky. Twelve years have passed, and now...

Have you not returned yet? Do you also consider yourselves disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha? They all sat in silence, and then, walking away from them, he said: Venerable ones, those eight arrived here first, just as someone who falls on the ground relies on the ground to stand up. In short, go to Shravasti and ask for forgiveness from the Blessed One and the Sangha. Then, the monks of Kaushambi, after leaving that very night, carrying their alms bowls and robes, without entering Kaushambi, traveled to where Shravasti was. The Venerable Ananda heard that the monks of Kaushambi were quarreling, exposing each other's faults, arguing, opposing, and creating disputes. Those who displeased the Blessed One and came here, because they are shameless, would argue with us just for the sake of begging for alms. Let us rather inform the Blessed One. Thinking this, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, I have heard that the monks of Kaushambi are quarreling, exposing each other's faults, arguing, opposing, and creating disputes. Those who displeased the Blessed One and came here, because they are shameless, would argue with us just for the sake of begging for alms. If they remember (what happened before), how should we treat them? Ananda, apart from gesturing to them to show them the worst dwelling, the monks should not speak to them, should not say "Please come in," and should not pay attention to them. If they say, "We are old, why do you give us the worst dwelling?" then, your conduct and behavior, and evil deeds, have displeased the Teacher, and having not been accepted by the Teacher, you have come here. Do you also consider yourselves disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha? Can you not even control these things that the compassionate Teacher has allowed?

Speak. The great mother of beings, Gautami, heard that the monks of Kaushambi were fighting, exposing each other's faults, arguing, quarreling, and creating disputes. Thinking this, she went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, she bowed to the Blessed One's feet with her head and sat to one side. Sitting to one side, the great mother of beings, Gautami, said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, I have heard that the monks of Kaushambi are fighting, exposing each other's faults, arguing, quarreling, and creating disputes. How should I reconcile them? Gautami, as the leader of the retinue of the monks of Kaushambi, as soon as you see them, except for throwing away the seat, do not talk to them, do not say "Please come", do not look at them, do not scrutinize them. Then, the monks of Kaushambi gradually went to Shravasti, and there
