Having put down the alms bowl and Dharma robes, washed his feet, he asked: Who arranges the lodging? The attendants replied: It is the venerable Ānanda. Then he went to where the venerable Ānanda was, and having arrived, he said this to the venerable Ānanda: Venerable Ānanda, please give us lodging. The venerable Ānanda gestured to them, indicating a last-rate lodging, and they said: Venerable Ānanda, we are old, why do you give us the worst lodging? He said: You are also Śākya's sons, the renunciates, from "are" to "that is not up to you either", it is just as before. They were discouraged and spent the night in suffering. Then, the monk who had been expelled, in the latter part of the night, examined his own mind, and he thought to himself: We have quarreled, exposed faults, argued, and debated, and thus have we fallen into transgression? Or have we not fallen into transgression? Have we been expelled? Or have we not been expelled? I have not not fallen into transgression, but have fallen into transgression, and I have not not been expelled, but have been expelled, and since I have been expelled, it is not proper to expel without following the Dharma and without establishing a non-conflicting procedure. I will make amends. Having thought this, he arose early the next morning and went to where the monks who followed the expelled one and the followers of the followers of the expelled one were, and having arrived, he said this to the monks who followed the expelled one and the followers of the followers of the expelled one: Venerable ones, here, in the latter part of the night and early morning, I examined my own mind and thought to myself: From what dispute did quarreling, exposing faults, arguing, and debating arise, and thus have we fallen into transgression? Or have we not fallen into transgression? Have we been expelled? Or have we not been expelled? I have not not fallen into transgression, but have fallen into transgression,

It is not expulsion from the land, but expulsion from the dwelling. Whoever is expelled from the dwelling, because it is not appropriate to place those who do not disturb the Dharma, they are expelled. If I think to reconcile harmoniously, what do you say? They said: Very well, let it be done that way. Then, the monks expelled from the dwelling, and the monks who followed the expelled from the dwelling, and the monks who followed the followers of the expelled from the dwelling, and the monks who expel from the dwelling, and the monks who follow the expellers from the dwelling, and those who follow the followers of the expellers from the dwelling, went to where they were, and then said this to the monks who expel from the dwelling, and the monks who follow the expellers from the dwelling, and the monks who follow the followers of the expellers from the dwelling: Venerable ones, here, in the latter half of Ma and Sunam, when I examine my own mind, I think this: from what dispute and fault-finding did it arise, until the thought of reconciling harmoniously, it is as before. What do you say? They said: Very well, let it be done that way. Then, the monks expelled from the dwelling, and the monks who followed the expelled from the dwelling, and those who followed the followers of the expelled from the dwelling, and the monks who expel from the dwelling, and the monks who follow the expellers from the dwelling, and those who follow the followers of the expellers from the dwelling, went to where the Blessed One was, and bowed their heads to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the monk expelled from the dwelling said this to the Blessed One: Venerable one, here, in the latter half of Ma and Sunam, when I examine my own mind, I think this, until the thought of reconciling harmoniously, it is as before. I am pleased to reconcile all these monks. The Blessed One said: Monk,

Longda, well done, well done! Whoever dwells because monks have quarrels, expose each other's shortcomings, argue, and debate, and reconciles those who dwell on this side and the other side, will generate immeasurable, countless, and immeasurable merit. Just as someone cuts a hair into a hundred pieces and joins the beginning and the end, similarly, whoever reconciles the monks' quarrels and makes them harmonious will generate immeasurable, countless, and immeasurable merit, as before. Monks, however, I shall establish the practice of a monk who has been expelled from the monastery. A monk who has been expelled should request the Sangha to expel him. The request should be made as follows: Prepare a dwelling place, strike the bell, and admonish the monks with words of inquiry, so that the entire Sangha gathers and unites, and serve them respectfully according to their seniority. Kneel with palms together in front of the elders and say: Venerable Sangha, please listen. My dispute arose from quarrels, exposing shortcomings, arguments, and debates, such as: Have I committed an offense? Or have I not committed an offense? Should I be expelled? Or should I not be expelled? I have not not committed an offense, but I have committed an offense; I should not not be expelled, but I should be expelled. However, since I have been expelled, it is not appropriate to establish actions that are contrary to the Dharma and inappropriate. Therefore, I have been expelled. The expelled monk, whose name is so-and-so, requests the Sangha to expel me. Venerable Sangha, compassionate ones, please be compassionate and expel me. I will act according to the Dharma and the Vinaya. This should be said twice or three times. Then, one monk should make a request and perform the Karma. Venerable Sangha, please listen. This venerable one's dispute arose from quarrels, exposing shortcomings, arguments, and debates, such as: Has he committed an offense?
