Those fortunate ones, disliked by many, unwanted by many, displeasing to many, unpleasant to many, the common dharma of all sentient beings is like this: that which is called death will come. If I am taken away with illness, why go to the edge of the city? Those people said: Fortunate one, although it is so, the longer a person, a moral person, lives, the more merit he accumulates, and so on. The more merit accumulated, the longer one will enjoy happiness in the heavens. They encouraged him in this way, then descended to the ground and gradually went to the palace of King Śibi of the Land of Yang. Then, tired from the journey, he rested and went to the doctor, saying: Kind one, I am afflicted with such a disease, please give me a prescription. The doctor said: Venerable one, your illness is exactly the same as that of the king's son. For twelve years, all the essence has been preserved with ghee and boiled things. Please go and beg for it. If someone with special merit obtains that essence, then you will live. He went to the palace and sat at the gate. The custom of that king was to always hang a bell at the gate so that beggars could enter. Whenever a beggar was at the gate, he would ring that bell. Soon, a Pratyekabuddha came and rang the bell. Then the king's son said to his parents: Father, Mother, there is a beggar, what does he say he wants to beg for? The two of them said: Son, we have collected things for twelve years and made an essence by boiling them. Drink a little of this first, then call the beggar in and ask him what he wants to beg for. He did amazing, auspicious, and wonderful things, and when he wanted to drink the ghee, the beggar's expectation touched his body, and he did not drink the ghee, but said: Father, Mother, I cannot drink until the beggar is called in. The king ordered the gatekeeper: Let the beggar in. After he entered, the king's son saw that his body was beautiful, his heart was devout, and his behavior was peaceful.

Seeing him enter, he asked: Holy one, what do you desire? He explained in detail. The man said: Holy one, the essence is only suitable for you, not for me, please enjoy it. He took the bowl, and the king's son poured the essence into the bowl with a strong intention. That great being also generated the mind of benefiting all sentient beings towards the king's son, and the aspiration endowed with morality will be fulfilled. Moreover, because the precepts were completely pure, both were revived. Monks, what do you think? The young prince at that time was me. Even then I was kind to the sick, let alone now. Venerable ones, what deeds did the prince and the Pratyekabuddha do? Therefore, both escaped together and were revived together. The Blessed One said: Monks, it is only these two who have obtained the collection of karma in other previous lives, completely transforming the conditions. Like light, being near, existing without doubt, the karma that will arise, because they have done and accumulated these karmas, only these two have done and accumulated karma, who else will experience it separately? Monks, the karma that has been done and accumulated will not mature in the external earth element, will not mature in the water element, will not mature in the fire element, will not mature in the wind element. But like this, the virtuous and non-virtuous karma that has been done and accumulated will mature in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. Even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, karma will not be wasted, and when the collection and time are ripe, it will become fruit for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadatta. He had two sons, and the youngest of them was fond of the kingdom. The minister also had two sons, and the youngest of them wanted to become a minister. Because beings are compatible with each other from the perspective of elements, the two were drawn to each other, and the prince said: What method can I use to become king? He said: If you

If I become your jester, I will have a way to inform you. He said: Do so, speak. He said: I will make your elder brother a cripple, and you will become king. He subsequently agreed. Then, he gave the eldest prince something that was not medicine, and he became a cripple. At another time, the king died, and the ministers, thinking that he had become a cripple, crowned the youngest brother as king. He also made the jester's younger brother the jester. After some time, while the king was laughing and joking with the jester, the king saw the crippled brother. Seeing him, he felt remorse, saying, "I have done something bad by making my brother a cripple for the sake of the kingdom's throne. I, the god, also feel remorse. If the god is pleased, I will restore him to his former state." He said: Please allow me to do so. He gave him medicine, and he was healed. Then, the two of them did service to a Pratyekabuddha and began to make a prayer: "Whatever merit we have gained from serving such a sacred object of offering, may we be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and may we not experience the ripening of the sinful deed of making someone a cripple." Monks, what do you think? At that time, the king's son was I myself. The jester's son was that very Pratyekabuddha. Because the two of them conspired and gave the young prince something that was not medicine, they both became cripples together. And because they felt remorse, the two of them conspired and gave him medicine again, and therefore they were healed together. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely black deeds is completely black, the ripening of completely white deeds is completely white, and the ripening of mixed deeds is mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon completely black deeds and mixed deeds, and one should strive for completely white deeds. Monks, you should be like that.
