It should be told. The beginning is in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, there was a householder named Merchant (ཚོང་དཔོན།), who was rich and had abundant wealth, enjoyed great prosperity, fully possessed vast and extensive properties, and was endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana (རྣམ་ཐོས་ཀྱི་བུ།). There was someone who rivaled Vaishravana in wealth. He took a wife from an equal lineage, but she was childless, and he desired a child. Therefore, he prayed to Shiva (ཞི་བ།) and the water deity (ཆུ་ལྷ།), as well as the Evil Body (ལུས་ངན།), Indra (བརྒྱ་བྱིན།), Brahma (ཚངས་པ།), and so on. He also prayed to other kinds of deities, such as: the deities of the pleasure garden, the deities of the vegetable garden, the deities of the crossroads, the deities of the triple crossroads, the deities who receive torma, the co-born deities, the deities who are in accordance with the Dharma, and the deities who always follow. There is a saying in the world that boys and girls are born through praying to certain deities. But that is not the case. If it were so, then everyone would have thousands of sons, like a Chakravartin king. However, boys and girls are born only when three conditions are present. What are these three conditions? The union and coming together of the father and mother, the mother being in season and having menstruation, and the Gandharva (དྲི་ཟ།) being nearby. Only when these three conditions are present will boys and girls be born. When he prayed to the deities but did not have boys and girls, he abandoned all the deities and turned to complete faith in the Bhagavan. When he went to a monk and requested, 'I wish to go forth in the Dharma and Vinaya well-spoken by the Bhagavan. Please treat me as you would Good Face (བཞིན་བཟངས།).' Then, that monk gradually shaved his hair and began to bestow the precepts, but at that time, he was struck by a severe illness, and his going forth was thus obstructed. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said, 'For the time being, do not bestow the precepts on him, but take care of him until he recovers.' When the Bhagavan said to take care of him, the monks did not know who should take care of him, and the Bhagavan said,

P. (This was said by) the monks and the doctors. If the doctors treated him during the day, it would benefit his illness at night. They said, "If the attendant of this noble one holds an umbrella for him, it will benefit his taste at night. If we take him home, we will treat him day and night." At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Take him home, and there also give him offerings and help." His illness lasted a long time, and his hair grew long, so that householder was known as "the householder with long hair." When he was served with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, but there was no improvement, he decided that he would die. Then, at the time of his death, he wrote all his wealth on a tablet and sent it to Prince Jeta's Grove. Then he died. The ministers said to King Pasenadi of Kosala, "O god, the householder with long hair has died without a son. He had much wealth, such as cloth, gold, elephants, horses, cows, buffaloes, armor, and so on, and he wrote all of this on a tablet and offered it to the noble Sangha in Prince Jeta's Grove." The king said, "Even if the noble Ananda possesses something that is not written on a tablet, I would not obtain it. What need is there to mention what is written on a tablet? However, see what the Blessed One allows." At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Monks, what does he have?" Intermediate summary: Land and dwellings, clothes and, black iron and blacksmiths, potters, barbers, carpenters, etc., paints, arrow shafts, sugarcane and, bipeds and quadrupeds, food and drink, medicine and, servants and mats, vouchers and seals, should be distributed according to their respective kinds. Cloth and gold, and other processed and unprocessed items, should be distributed after the Sangha has gathered, so the great sage taught.
