Then the community of monks arrived. The Blessed One was dwelling in a place accomplished by substance, partaking of the alms-food. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, dwell in a place accomplished by substance for five reasons, partaking of the alms-food. What are the five? Wishing to abide correctly within, wishing to teach the Dharma to the gods, wishing to observe the dwelling places, wishing to visit the sick, and wishing to establish the basis of training for disciplining the hearers. In this instance, it was out of wishing to visit the sick and to establish the basis of training. Thus, the Buddha, the Blessed One, dwelt in a place accomplished by substance, partaking of the alms-food. Then, the Blessed One, knowing that the community of monks had been gone for a long time, took the key and walked from monastery to monastery, from temple to temple, from hut to hut, from promenade to promenade. When he arrived at the great temple, there, a monk who was severely ill, of little understanding, was submerged in his own urine and vomit. He saw the Blessed One and cried out, "Blessed One, I have no protector! The Sugata, I have no protector!" The Blessed One said, "Monk, I, the protector of the three realms, since you have gone forth after me, why do you cry out, 'Blessed One, I have no protector! Sugata, I have no protector!'? Venerable one, I have no fellow practitioners to serve or care for me." The monk said, "Have you ever served or cared for other fellow practitioners?" The monk replied, "No." "Therefore, you have come to such a state." The Blessed One exclaimed, "Alas, may Indra, the lord of the gods, bring water from the great lake Anavatapta, and may he bring earth from the fragrance emanating from Mount Malaya!" The Blessed One generated worldly compassion. According to the Dharma, when the Blessed One generated worldly compassion, Indra and Brahma, and the other gods, also by the Blessed One's intention,

knew it. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, filled a golden bowl with water possessing eight qualities from the great Lake Manasarovar, took earth from a place exuding the fragrance of sandalwood, and quickly came before the Blessed One, sat down, and said: "Blessed One, please abide here, and I will attend to you." The Blessed One said: "Kauśika, this is not for your sake that I have renounced, but for mine. Furthermore, you have not seen this before, and the gods delight in cleanliness, so please stay here, and I will attend to him." Then, the Blessed One folded his monastic robes, pressed his hand upon the wheel, auspicious signs, and swastika, accomplished by hundreds of thousands of merits, giving comfort to those who are afraid, lifted up that monk, pulled him out from his urine, feces, and vomit, and placed him aside. He scraped him with bamboo strips, wiped him with white clay, and then washed him. Then, he had him sit in the lotus position, washed his monastic robes. That place was also smeared with soft cow dung. Then, after washing his hands and feet, he taught Indra, the lord of the gods, the Dharma of prioritizing service to the inner path, causing him to understand and accept it correctly, and then entered the monastery. The venerable Ānanda, carrying the alms food of his share, went before the Blessed One. According to the Dharma, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are always pleased first with the monk who receives alms and brings back food, so they each rejoiced greatly. The Blessed One rejoiced greatly and asked: "Has the monastic community of monks been well satisfied with the alms food?" The venerable one replied: "Yes, I have well satisfied the monastic community of monks with the alms food." Then, the Blessed One took half of the alms food and said to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, go to such and such a monastery, where there is a monk with a severe illness."

There was a sick person, and you should take this half bowl of food to him and say, 'Venerable one, the Teacher himself is attending to you and has also given you half a bowl of food.' The monk replied, 'As you command.' The Venerable Ananda, having heard the words of the Blessed One, took half a bowl of food and gave it to the sick person, and also spoke the words that the Blessed One had spoken. Vinaya-vastu, Volume Sixty-Six. Then that monk thought to himself, 'I am being attended to by the Lord of the Three Realms himself, and he has also given me half a bowl of food. It is not proper for me to live my life in laziness, enjoying the offerings given in faith.' Therefore, I should not sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, but should strive diligently in practice.' So, he did not sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, but strove diligently in practice, and realized the moving and unmoving five aggregates of samsara. He subdued all conditioned phenomena, which are by nature decaying, falling, scattering, and destroying, and having abandoned all defilements, he became an Arhat. Having become an Arhat, he was free from desire for the three realms, dung and gold were the same to him, the sky and the palm of his hand were the same, his mind was equal like sandalwood and firewood, he had broken the shell of ignorance, and had obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual self-awareness. He turned his back on worldly existence and the gains and honors of desire, and became an object of worship, remembrance, and praise by the gods, including those with roots and those near the roots. Then the Blessed One said to the monks, 'Monks, for these sick people, there is no mother, no father, and no other relatives except for you, the practitioners of the pure life.' Therefore, those who practice the pure life should attend to each other. The preceptor should attend to the co-resident, the co-resident should attend to the preceptor, the teacher should attend to the attendant, the attendant should attend to the teacher, one with the same preceptor should attend to one with the same preceptor, one with the same teacher should attend to one with the same teacher, those who converse
