It should be abandoned. If (the patient) has nothing, then it is a good use (of possessions), and it is reasonable like a father treating his son, so there should be no regret about it. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. A monk who was afflicted with illness, suffering greatly, with a severe illness, and feeling danger, had a good bowl. He was particularly attached to that bowl, and said to the person serving him, 'Give me my bowl.' (The attendant) did not give it to him, so he developed ill will towards (the attendant), and because he was particularly attached to the bowl, he died and was reborn as a snake in the bowl itself. The monks took it to be cremated, and after cremation, they arrived at the monastery, and the monastic community of monks gathered together. The person in charge of laying out the bedding piled the deceased's belongings next to the elder. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda, 'Ananda, go and tell the monks that no monk should open the container holding the bowl, the Tathagata himself will open it.' The Venerable Ananda told the monks. Then, the Blessed One himself opened (the container) and saw a snake with its head raised high. Then, the Blessed One awakened it with the sound of a bell, saying, 'Foolish one, put down this bowl and go away! The monks will divide (your bowl).' The snake angrily left as it pleased and entered a dense forest. There it lit the fire of anger, the forest was completely burned, and it itself was burned to death. Because it had developed ill will towards the monks, it was reborn in hell. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, 'Monks, be afraid of all conditioned phenomena!' For the sake of conditioned phenomena, the body of a sentient being, those three places, the fire fleeing into the dense forest, and the hell of sentient beings in hell, and being burned by ordinary fire in the charnel ground, all of these should be renounced. Therefore, a monk should not be particularly attached to possessions, and whatever gives rise to attachment should be completely abandoned. If it is not abandoned, a serious offense will be committed. Furthermore, if a sick person asks for his own possessions, the attendant should give them as quickly as possible. If it is not given, a serious offense will be committed.

That's how it will be. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. At that time, a sick monk died in his dwelling and was reborn among the non-humans. The robe distributor was about to enter that monk's dwelling, intending to distribute the alms bowl and robes. That non-human, completely entangled and fiercely angry, picked up a stick and stood up, saying: Wait a moment, I haven't even been taken to the charnel ground yet, and you're already distributing the alms bowl and robes? He fled in terror. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: First, take the monk's corpse out, and then distribute his alms bowl and robes. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. At that time, a monk died, and the monks carried him out, leaving him in the charnel ground as he was, and then arrived at the monastery. The robe distributor, intending to distribute the robes and alms bowl, entered his dwelling, and he, having been reborn as a non-human, picked up a stick and stood up, saying: Wait a moment, my corpse hasn't even been offered to yet, and you're already distributing the robes and alms bowl? The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: The monks should first make offerings to his corpse, and then distribute the alms bowl and robes, and there will be no fault in this. At that time, a sick monk died in his dwelling, and the monks carried him to the charnel ground, made offerings to and cremated the corpse, and then arrived at the monastery. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Dharma should be proclaimed for his sake, and merit should be dedicated for his sake, and then the robes should be distributed. Summary: The sick person and the merchant, the debt of things taken by hand, the things to be done in the four boundaries, and the things to be done by the eight messengers.
