The Teacher said: 'This foolish person is a sign of the heretics,' from that point until 'it becomes a serious offense,' it is as before. Again, a certain monk said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, I wish to be naked.' The Blessed One said: 'This foolish person, like this, being naked is a sign of the heretics. Furthermore, I have permitted the three robes, why do you go naked? Therefore, a monk should not go naked. If he does, it becomes a serious offense.' Then, that monk, not being allowed to be naked, abandoned the precepts and fell away. The monks, having doubts, asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: 'Venerable One, look at this monk who, not being allowed to be naked, has abandoned the precepts and fallen away.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, not only now, but know that in the past also, this one did not obtain a wife because of the fault of having no shame. Monks, in the past there was a swan king named Delightful Wheel Protector, and his daughter was seeking a husband for herself. Having heard this, the birds dwelling in various places gathered together, each thinking: 'I will become her husband.' He saw a peacock and thought: 'This will become my husband.' Others said to him: 'He has chosen you as his husband.' Then the peacock raised its tail and began to dance, and Delightful Wheel Protector saw it and said: 'Why is he dancing?' Others said: 'Because he has become the husband of your daughter.' He said: 'Because he has no shame and no modesty, I will not give my daughter to him.' Having heard this, the peacock went to Delightful Wheel Protector and said in verses: 'A voice that is melodious and pleasing, a color that is beautiful, feathers a fathom long and of perfect measure, a throat that is like a jewel of lapis lazuli, why do you not give me your daughter?' Delightful Wheel Protector said: 'A voice that is melodious and pleasing, a color that is beautiful, feathers a fathom long and of perfect measure, a throat that is like a jewel of lapis lazuli, even so, because you are shameless.'

Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to wear all blue Dharma robes. The Blessed One said: This is what householders wear. Therefore, a monk should not cut all the Dharma robes into blue, from this point until committing a grave offense, it is the same as before. Similarly, all yellow, or all red, or white, are not allowed. Summary: Long shawls and ornaments, hair knots, hair decorations, and turbans, animal skin clothes and peacock feathers, liver disease, Kunga, skirts, etc. Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to wear a long shawl Dharma robe. The Blessed One said: This is the mark of a heretic. From this point until committing a grave offense, it is the same as before. Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to wear a Dharma robe like an ornament. The Blessed One said: Foolish person, this is the mark of a heretic. From this point until committing a grave offense, it is the same as before. Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to keep a hair knot. The Blessed One said: Foolish person, this is the mark of a householder. From this point until committing a grave offense, it is the same as before. Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to make a hair decoration. The Blessed One said: Foolish person, this is the mark of a householder. From this point until committing a grave offense, it is the same as before. Again, a certain monk reported to the Blessed One thus: Venerable one, I wish to wear a turban. The Blessed One said: Foolish person, this is the mark of a householder.
