I take refuge in the Sangha of monks. Please accept me as a lay devotee. From now until the end of my life, I take refuge in you at the cost of my life, I have unwavering faith. Then, the king of medicine, Jivaka, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Mount Snow is the king of mountains, constantly covered with snow and ice, and the wind is strong. The Blessed One was afflicted with a cold disease, and the king of medicine, Jivaka, thought: Just as with a Chakravartin king, I myself should personally attend to the Blessed One. Then, Jivaka mixed thirty-two utpala flowers with cleansing medicine and offered them to the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, please smell these with your nose. When the Blessed One smelled them, only thirty-two impurities were cleansed. Then, he asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, are you well cleansed? The Blessed One replied: Jivaka, there are some faults that moved but were not cleansed, some cleansing paths moved, some were cleansed and moved, and some were neither cleansed nor moved. Jivaka asked: Blessed One, if that is so, please take jaggery and haritaki and also drink the juice in order. The Blessed One did so, and the illness subsided. Jivaka's common practice was that whatever king or minister he treated, they would give him a village or the best village. At another time, Jivaka treated the King of Embodied Light, and the king gave him a fine cotton cloth worth a hundred thousand. He took the cloth and went to where the Blessed One was, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the young Jivaka respectfully said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, my common practice is that whatever king or minister I treat, they give me a village or the best village. I treated the King of Embodied Light, and he gave me a

Offering this piece of cloth, I offer it to the Blessed One. Blessed One, please accept this with compassion. The Blessed One accepted the large piece of fine cotton cloth worth a hundred thousand, offered by the young physician Jivaka. At that time, the venerable Ananda was holding a fan beside the Blessed One, fanning the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, take this large piece of fine cotton cloth worth a hundred thousand and cut it with a knife for me. Then, the venerable Ananda took the cloth and went to a clear and open place, and began to measure it, and saw that it was enough to make many Dharma robes. Then, he made the three robes of the Blessed One, as well as his own upper garment and lower skirt, and a short-sleeved robe for the venerable Sound Increase. The Blessed One obtained five hundred pieces of cloth at that summer retreat, and the Sangha of monks also obtained many, but the monks did not know what to do with them, so the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught: Therefore, it is permitted for monks to cut the clothes of householders with a knife, make them of bad color, and wear them. The daily practice of King Embodied Heart is that if he sees a monk or nun, he gets off the elephant and prostrates at their feet. At another time, he rode an elephant and bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and then went in one direction. Soon, he saw a liver in the middle of the road, and he developed respect for him, got off the elephant, and touched his feet to the ground. Those who did not believe thought: The deity does not only have faith in monks. Those who had faith thought: Without a doubt, the deity thought that was a monk, so he respectfully got off the elephant and touched his feet to the ground. Thinking this, they became hesitant and said to the king: To whom did you prostrate? To the Hearer of the Blessed One. The deity is not the Hearer of the Blessed One, but a liver. Then, King Embodied Heart

The Earth-Heart (Sachen Nyingpo) thought to himself: I will only pray for this matter. Thinking so, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. After sitting to one side, the King of Magadha, Skillful-Form-Heart (Zosang Zukchen Nyingpo), said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, my usual practice is that if I do not see a monk or nun, I ride an elephant and pay homage to its feet. Today, I felt reverence and got off the elephant, thinking it was a monk, and touched the feet of a butcher. Alas, Blessed One, please hold me in your compassion, and please put some marks on the robes of the noble ones. The Blessed One did not speak to King Form-Heart, indicating his consent. Then, King Form-Heart, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant consent, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and left. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, it is inappropriate and a downfall for any butcher to accept homage on the grounds of having seen the truth. At that time, the venerable Ananda was holding a fan beside the Blessed One, fanning the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, do you see the mountain with the towering body? Venerable One, I do not see it. Hold the edge of the Tathagata's Dharma robe. After he held it, the Blessed One disappeared from Rajagriha, and from there, by means of miraculous power, descended from the sky above and dwelt on the mountain with the towering body. At that time, the people of Magadha saw the fields were level, the neighboring areas were also level, the various differences in color, and the beautiful scenes connected by ridges of color, and then said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, do you see the fields that are level, the neighboring areas that are also level, the various differences in color, and the beautiful scenes connected by ridges of color? Venerable One, I see them. Ananda, therefore, monks should cut and sew Dharma robes in this way. The venerable Ananda.
