Knowing that the Blessed One had granted permission by not speaking, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and departed from before the Blessed One. Then, five hundred hungry ghosts, with their hair covering them like a string of connected bones, bellies as large as Mount Sumeru, mouths as small as the eye of a needle, blazing, intensely blazing, completely blazing, entirely blazing, becoming a single flame, came to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, circumambulated the Blessed One and sat down, saying this: "Blessed One, these Brahmins and householders of the city of Thikshana (Water Drop) are our relatives. Alas, Blessed One, please hold compassion closely and dedicate the merit only in our names!" The Blessed One said, "I have made a vow: if you come to dedicate merit in this very form, then I will dedicate the merit in your names." They said, "Blessed One, what if we borrow another form?" Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke in verse, saying: They are ashamed of what is not shameful, And are not ashamed of what is shameful. They see fear in what is not fearful, And do not see fear in what is fearful. Having adopted wrong views, Beings go to bad destinies. They are ashamed of what is shameful, And are not ashamed of what is not shameful. They see no fear in what is not fearful, And see fear in what is fearful. Having adopted right views, Beings go to happy destinies." They said, "Blessed One, if that is so, then it is good." Then, the Brahmins and householders of the city of Thikshana, from that very night, prepared clean and blessed food and drink, and then from "taking a very low seat and sitting before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma" up to the previous part is the same as before. Those five hundred hungry ghosts came, and then the Brahmins and householders of the city of Thikshana, seeing the hungry ghosts, began to flee, and the Blessed One said, "Knowledgeable ones, why are you fleeing?" They said, "Blessed One, those are hungry ghosts." The Blessed One said, "Come here, these are your

By this (giving), may clothes, drinks, and food, As well as various kinds of dwellings, Be inexhaustible at all times, May they all be accomplished! Then, the Blessed One, with Dharma-related words, truly taught, caused to uphold, praised, and greatly rejoiced the Brahmins and householders of the city of Thikpa (Drop City), and then arose from the seat and departed. After that, the Brahmins and householders of the city of Thikpa gathered in the contemplation hall and discussed such words: Alas! The ascetic Gautama is very greedy, and his disciples are also very greedy. Some said: Wise ones, the ascetic Gautama has little greed, and his disciples also have little greed, but the non-Buddhists are not like that. At that time, a person named Brahmin Lion of Speech also gathered and sat in that assembly. Then, the Brahmin Lion of Speech said to the Brahmins and

Monks, the debater Brahmin Lion, seeking a quarrel, invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to a place where they were treated with molasses. He said: Whichever of you needs how much, take that much. The son of the debater Brahmin Lion had five hundred shops selling molasses, and he took a jar of molasses from each shop. Taking five hundred jars of molasses, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he said to the Blessed One: Wise Gautama, the molasses is ready, please enjoy it together with the Sangha of disciples. Then, the Blessed One put away his hand and bowl, and sat down on the seat prepared for the Sangha of monks. Then, the debater Brahmin Lion took a jar of molasses and began to distribute it, and the Blessed One blessed it so that no matter how he distributed it among the Sangha of monks, the molasses remained, and everything remained the same. Then, the debater Brahmin Lion developed great faith. Then, after he developed faith, he proclaimed in all directions: Wise ones, the ascetic Gautama is content with little, and his disciples are also content with little. Then, in order to have the heretics enjoy the molasses, he invited them as guests. They took the molasses immoderately, some enjoyed it, and some filled the jars and then discarded, took away, and poured it out. Then, the debater Brahmin Lion said: Foolish men, only you are very greedy, while the ascetic Gautama is content with little, and his disciples are also content with little. Having said this, he developed even greater faith in the Blessed One, and went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, together with the Blessed One, up to "manifestation" was as before. He said to the Blessed One: Venerable one, from the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, I wish to undertake, up to the Brahmacharya, as before. Then, the Blessed One said: Monk, come here, up to Monk, come here, practice Brahmacharya.
