From the phrase "Please partake," up to the phrase "The Buddha covered his body with his thought," it is the same as before. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Therefore, it is permitted to partake of jaggery, whether it is the right time or not, whether one is sick or not sick. One should not regret this. The Venerable Lion of Speech, not having attained single-pointedness of mind due to the unpleasant smell of the decaying corpse, the Blessed One thought: If this monk, the Lion of Speech, is in his last existence, why has he not seen the truth? He observed that it was caused by the unpleasant smell of the decaying corpse. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and sprinkle the monastery of the monk, the Lion of Speech, with incense, garlands of flowers, incense, and powders. Fumigate his dwelling with incense, decorate it with fragrant flowers, and hang a canopy of flowers. The Venerable Ananda replied: Venerable One, I will do as you command. Then, he went to the monastery and, before the Blessed One went for alms, did everything as the Blessed One had commanded. Afterwards, the Venerable Lion of Speech returned from alms round, and seeing the splendor of the gods, with a joyful mind, he partook of the alms, finished his meal, washed his feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, sat in the lotus position, straightened his body, and placed mindfulness before him. Smelling the fragrance, his mind arose in equanimity. Then, he abandoned all defilements and realized the state of an Arhat. From the phrase "having realized the state of an Arhat," up to the phrase "manifestly spoke," it is the same as before. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, among my monks and my disciples who are liberated through disgust, the foremost is this monk, the Lion of Speech. The monks arose with doubt and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, the monk

If others are liberated by impurity, behold the Venerable Speaker Lion liberated by impurity. The Blessed One declared: Monks, this one has died and been born in succession from the gods of the Thirty-three for five hundred lifetimes, and now, in his last existence born among humans, he could not achieve single-mindedness due to smelling the odor of a decaying body. By smelling a fragrant odor and attaining equanimity of mind, he became liberated by impurity. If this method had not been employed for him, even warmth would not have been generated by him. Therefore, allow it; whatever others become liberated by such impurity, that same procedure should be followed, and there should be no regret for this. Then, the Blessed One departed from Shravasti, traveling through the countryside, and arrived at Vaishali, where he resided at the stacked house near the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. The Brahmins and householders of Vaishali heard that the Blessed One had departed from Shravasti, traveling through the countryside, and had arrived at Vaishali, where he was residing at the stacked house near the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. Having heard this, they gathered together and said: Wise ones, it is said that the Blessed One has departed from Shravasti, traveling through the countryside, and has arrived at Vaishali, where he is residing at the stacked house near the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. If each of us were to invite the Blessed One and offer alms, the Blessed One would depart again, and others would not find an opportunity, so let us enact a law that in any case, only a gathering and assembly should offer alms to the Blessed One, and not a single person alone. They made and kept these enactments as law. At that time, there resided in Vaishali four individuals possessed of great merit: the wealthy one, the wealthy one's wife, the wealthy one's son, and the wealthy one's daughter-in-law. In their homes, the fortune of gods and humans descended. Without having heard the law that had been enacted, the householder, the wealthy one, invited the Blessed One, who had departed from Shravasti, traveling through the countryside, and had arrived at Vaishali, to the
