Having requested, the Blessed One said: Monks, since food cannot perform the function of food, whatever is placed inside the rice should be shaken off and eaten. Whatever is flour should be washed with water and then eaten. Some that have become melted should not be washed, as they have become one with the food. The Blessed One said: It should be shaved with a bamboo scraper and washed with water. However, if it is not possible to make it without food, the Blessed One said: Having carefully sorted it, it should be kneaded in water and drunk, and then it should be strained with a sieve and drunk, and there should be no regret about it. The monks became doubtful, and in order to cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable one, what deeds have been done by the householder's sheep, the sheep's dung, the sheep's son, the sheep's bride, the sheep's male servant, and the sheep's female servant, that these six have become greatly meritorious? Having seen the truth in the presence of the Blessed One, these have pleased the Blessed One, and have not displeased him. The Blessed One said: Monks, these themselves have done these deeds, and having accumulated these deeds, from what is called "obtaining wealth" to what is called "becoming fruits," it is just as before. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, a king named Brahma-datta was made to rule the kingdom. At that time, the fortune-tellers in the city of Varanasi prophesied that there would be no rain for twelve years, and there would be a great famine where life would be sustained by spoons. The three kinds of famine are: Zamatog, white bone heap, and sustenance by spoons. What is called Zamatog is that people put grains into the Zamatog and store them for the sake of future sentient beings, thinking that after we die, these grains will be used to help those people. This is related to Zamatog, so it is called Zamatog. What is the white bone heap? At that time, people collected human bones and boiled them for a while, until the bones turned white, and then they drank the bone broth. This is related to the white bone heap, so it is called the white bone heap. Sustenance by spoons

What is that? At that time, people would dig out grains from the straw of grains with spoons, cook them in containers filled with water, and drink them. This is related to spoons, so it is called living by spoons. Then, King Brahma had it proclaimed in Varanasi: Listen, knowledgeable citizens living in Varanasi! The fortune tellers have predicted that because it will not rain for twelve years, there will be a famine of food shortage, white bones piling up, and living by spoons. Those of you who have food for twelve years, stay! Those who do not have food, go wherever you please, there is no famine now, and return when there is a good harvest! At that time, in Varanasi, there was a wealthy householder with much wealth, great enjoyment, and a large and extensive retinue. He summoned the steward and said: Steward, do I and my retinue have food for twelve years? The steward replied: Master, you do. Because he lived there, the famine only happened in his house, his storehouses were completely exhausted, all his retinue died, and only he and six people remained. Then, that householder swept the storehouses and found a small handful of rice. His wife put the rice in a container and cooked it. When Buddhas do not appear, from what is called a Pratyekabuddha, up to what is called the sole object of offering in the world appearing in the world, it is the same as before. When a Pratyekabuddha was traveling and went to Varanasi, in the morning he put on his skirt, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Varanasi to beg for food, and that householder was also preparing food. That Pratyekabuddha also went begging for food in order, and went to his house. That householder saw that he was beautiful in body and joyful in mind. Having seen him, he thought: Even if I eat this, I will not avoid death, so I will give my share to this renunciate. Then he said to his wife: Good woman, give my share to this renunciate! His wife thought: If my husband does not eat, what shall I eat? Then she said:
