Great King, what do you think? That Brahmin at that time was me practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Great King, if you think that I attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment by benefiting sentient beings through the conduct of a Bodhisattva, you should not view it that way. However, that was merely the cause, condition, and collection for my attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Great King, furthermore, listen to how I benefited sentient beings by satisfying five hundred ministers with their own flesh and blood. Great King, in a past time, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-dana who ruled. He had about five hundred ministers, and the vassal kings of the surrounding regions heard rumors that slandered these five hundred ministers. When the king heard this, he, being righteous, compassionate, fond of Dharma, loving to the people, and engaged in benefiting himself and others, thought, 'What good would it do to kill these men?' So he banished them. After they were banished, they passed through a reed thicket and came to a sandy island. There, they were afflicted by thirst, and searched for water, but found none. They cried out with one voice. At that time, the Bodhisattva, born as an elephant, well-formed with seven limbs among the elephants, like the son of a guardian elephant, by the power of his merit, caused the mountain valleys to be filled with flowers, abundant fruits, fortresses, lakes, and flowing water. The chief of the elephants sensed it from afar, filled his trunk with water, and ran. He went to the ministers, exhaled, washed their faces with water, carried them on his back into the mountain valley, satisfied them with fruits, roots, and water, and relieved their fatigue from the journey. Then he said to them, 'On the other side of this mountain valley, there is the corpse of a chief elephant. Use its intestines as ropes, gather roots and fruits with water, and pull it tight. In that way, you will be able to cross this wilderness.'

Having taught thus, the elephant king climbed that mountain and made the aspiration of bodhicitta: 'Just as I have completely rescued from this painful predicament, and shown the way to escape from this wilderness, and just as I have completely given up my life for the sake of these (beings), may I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and after becoming a Buddha, may I liberate these beings from the wilderness of samsara.' Having said this, the elephant curled its trunk with its two hands and jumped off the cliff of that mountain. As soon as the elephant king's huge body fell, it died instantly. When those ministers searched, they found it, and they went to that place. When they saw the elephant king, they said to each other: 'It is this elephant king who gave us our lives. If we put our hands on it, how could our hands fall down?' Then, the gods of the Pure Abode made a sound, saying: 'May this great being completely fulfill the wish for whom he gave up his life!' Then, those ministers took out the elephant king's intestines and stomach, washed them clean, filled them with water, and took roots and fruits, and made offerings to the elephant king's corpse, and escaped from that wilderness, and afterwards prayed: 'Just as this great being gave up his life to protect us, and saved us from this wilderness, may this great being attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and after becoming a Buddha, may he liberate us from the great wilderness of samsara.' The Blessed One said: 'Great King, what do you think? Who was the elephant king at that time? It was I myself. Great King, do you think that I can attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment by giving up myself? You should not think like that, but my giving up myself is only the cause, condition, and collection of the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.'

That's all. King, also, listen to what my unwavering mind was like, even though I satisfied many thousands of creatures with my own flesh in order to seek unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. King, in the past, in a bygone era, there was a young naga named Kumara Champaka, who had good faith and virtuous thoughts. On the eighth and fourteenth days of the month, he would observe the eight-limbed uposatha, maintain purity, make his body large, and then release it, abiding in the world without causing any harm to beings who walk and live. Because there was a bad harvest, people who did not look to their work, such as cowherds, shepherds, woodcutters, those who lived by the road, and those who lived by getting lost, began to cut and eat the flesh of the naga. After that, even though I satisfied them with my own flesh for a long time, my mind remained even. King, what do you think? That young naga Kumara Champaka of that time was myself. King, if you think that I obtained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment by completely giving up my own flesh, you should not think that way. However, that was only the cause, condition, and accumulation for my unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. King, also, listen to what I did to benefit sentient beings in order to seek unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. King, in the past, in the great Lake Anavatapta, there arose a leader of the geese named Yulkhor Kyong. He had two sons, named Gangwa and Shyingye. The elder brother was Gangwa, and the younger brother was Shyingye. Gangwa was a fierce, arrogant, and rude person who constantly threatened the geese. Sometimes he would pluck their feathers, and sometimes he would scratch them with his claws. Like that, he did hundreds of other harms, and the geese would go to the leader of the geese, Yulkhor Kyong, every day to complain. He thought, Gangwa is a fierce, arrogant, and rude person. If I put him in the position of regent, he will destroy the flock of geese after I die.
