Do it! In the monastery, the renunciant always sleeps with fierce wild animals on grass mats and leaf mats under trees, with fear and apprehension, awakened by the sound of jackals, wearing animal skins and bark clothes, eating roots and fruits, and having to drink warm water and muddy water. Why did you renounce the kingdom and become a renunciant? Then, that mute youth then spoke in verse: It is better to wear bark and animal skins in the forest, eat fruits, and live with fierce wild animals. Wise men, fearing the afterlife, should not kill, beat, or imprison for the sake of the kingdom. Please, father, allow me to go to the forest for asceticism. The king said: Son, first resolve these three doubts of mine, and then it will not be difficult for you to become a renunciant. When you saw the prosperous and flourishing Varanasi, did you say that Varanasi was empty? Or is there a resident? What did you think and say? Live for the sake of the god! The god commanded me to die without fault. Others also said why kill this young man, because he did not speak the words of the Dharma, so I said it based on this thought. Very good! When you saw the corpse, did you say that this was a dead death? Or a living person died? What did you think and say? Live for the sake of the god! Those who die doing evil deeds are dead deaths; and those who die doing good deeds are living deaths. I said it based on this thought. Very good! When you saw the huge pile of rice, did you say that this huge pile of rice was not eaten from the beginning and would become chaff? What did you think and say? Live for the sake of the god! These farmers borrow rice seeds to cultivate, and they work hard, and when the crops ripen, they pile up huge piles of rice, and then repay the creditors. In this way, their chaff is destined from the beginning. Similarly, the ten virtuous deeds of

If one obtains a human body through the path, and after obtaining it, does not practice the path of virtuous deeds, then the previous virtue will be interrupted. If the root of virtue is interrupted, one will fall from the happy realms and abide in the evil realms. I spoke after considering that (situation). Then, the king, hearing the words of his son, embraced him with tears in his eyes and said: Please practice asceticism and meditation, your own Dharma practice! I also promise to be your student. Then, King Pure Giving said to the ministers: Wise ones, if that mute youth had not renounced, what would have happened? He would have become a divine king. What would your sons become? They would become servants of that divine king. If he has renounced, why don't your sons renounce? What did the deity say? At that time, there was a dwelling not far from Varanasi, where a loving sage resided, possessing compassion and affection, cherishing love for all beings. Then, the mute youth, with five hundred attendants and great wealth, renounced from that sage, and the sage gave him teachings. Through effort, diligence, and strong perseverance, he manifested the five superknowledges. Then, at another time, that sage passed away, and the mute youth piled the sage's body on a pyre of various fragrant woods, burned it, and made great offerings and reverence. The mute youth gave instructions to those five hundred Brahmin boys, and through effort, diligence, and strong perseverance, they manifested the five superknowledges. The Blessed One said: Great King, what do you think? At that time, the mute youth of that time, who completely abandoned the kingdom that came into his hands, and who, with five hundred Brahmin boys, manifested the five superknowledges, was myself. Great King, if you think that I benefited all beings and abandoned the kingdom, therefore I attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, you should not think that way. However, my benefiting beings is the cause of attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.

It is merely the cause, condition, and collection for perfect enlightenment. Great King, listen again to how I, in order to seek unsurpassed and perfectly complete enlightenment, liberated the mountain deer and flocks of birds from the fear of fire. Great King, in a past time, in a dense forest adorned with mountains, water, green grass, vines, sal trees, and palasha trees, a large flock of birds lived in the depths of the forest. In that dense forest, two trees rubbed against each other, causing a fire to arise. There, those flocks of birds that could fly flew away. Those that could not fly and the eggs were abandoned there. At that time, the Bodhisattva was born as a partridge. The Bodhisattva saw a great fire burning and coming from a very far distance. Having seen it, he developed great compassion for those beings. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: If I do not strive for the sake of these suffering beings, what good is it for me to live? How should I liberate these beings from samsara? Having thought this, the Bodhisattva moistened his wings with water, stayed in the sky above the fire, shook his wings, and spoke in verses: These have wings, but cannot fly. These have feet, but cannot walk. These parents have flown away. Fire, do not move, stay still. By practicing great loving-kindness, whatever is the word of truth. By the power of the word of truth, fire, do not move, stay still. Indra, the lord of the gods, saw the Bodhisattva benefiting sentient beings. Having seen it, he became displeased, thinking: What benefit can he bring to them by abandoning himself like this? Furthermore, this Bodhisattva of the fortunate aeon will become weary of benefiting sentient beings; I should help him. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, sent down a great rain, and the fire was quickly extinguished. Thus, all those beings were liberated from the fear of fire.
