Homage. If I do not pay homage to the ascetic Gautama, the wise people of the border regions will say, 'Alas, King Brahmin Mesha-datta is a child, and the ascetic Gautama dwells near his town and fields, yet he has not been honored.' Therefore, I should think of offering all necessities to the ascetic Gautama and his community of disciples. Thinking thus, with the wealth of the great king and the power of the great king, he came from the border region to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he engaged in various conversations that were pleasing and delightful with the Blessed One, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Blessed One delighted the Brahmin Mesha-datta with talk in accordance with the Dharma, until he said nothing more, as before. Then, the Brahmin Mesha-datta rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed towards where the Blessed One was. He said to the Blessed One, 'Wise Gautama and his community of disciples, if for three months I could offer robes, food, bedding, and medicine for sickness, please allow me to do so.' The Blessed One said nothing to the Brahmin Mesha-datta, thus granting permission. Then, the Brahmin Mesha-datta, knowing that the Blessed One's silence was permission, was greatly pleased by the Blessed One's permission, rejoiced, rose from his seat, and departed. He returned to his own residence and instructed his ministers, 'Prepare daily five hundred portions of food and eighteen kinds of dishes, various kinds of beans, flavorful vegetables, and a great quantity of rice.' He had an announcement made in the border region: 'For three months, the ascetic Gautama is to be offered food by others. Whoever offers food will be put to death.' After he had announced this, he slept at night and dreamed that his intestines were encircling all the cities of the border region. He dreamed.

Then, Startled, frightened, trembling, and with hair standing on end, he quickly got up from the large bed. With his hands supporting his chin, he pondered in his heart: 'Will I lose my kingdom because of this, or will I encounter a threat to my life?' His heart was filled with worry. The next morning, he said to the Brahmin priest: 'Priest, I have seen such a dream, how should I deal with it?' The Brahmin priest thought: 'He has dreamed such an auspicious dream, if I were to say something in accordance with it, he would have even more faith in the ascetic Gautama, so I should say that this is a bad dream.' Thinking thus, he said: 'God, the dream is not good. Priest, what will be the result of this?' 'God, if it is not avoided, you may lose your kingdom or encounter a threat to your life.' The king thought: 'Alas, will I lose my kingdom or encounter a threat to my life?' Thinking thus, he said to the Brahmin priest: 'What good method is there to prevent me from losing my kingdom or encountering a threat to my life?' He said: 'God, if you stay in a deserted place for three months, then you will not lose your kingdom and you will not encounter a threat to your life.' Then, King Brahmin Misradatta thought: 'If that is the case, it is easy to do, I should issue a proclamation.' So, he issued a proclamation throughout the country: 'For three months, no one should look at me or come near me! Whoever comes will be punished with death!' After issuing the proclamation, he hid in a place where no one could see him for three months. The venerable Ananda got up early the next morning and went to the residence of King Brahmin Misradatta. He saw the servants of King Brahmin Misradatta, who lived on porridge, sitting listlessly. Seeing them, he said: 'Wise ones, why are you sitting listlessly?' They said: 'Venerable one, what are you going to do? Hasn't King Brahmin Misradatta forbidden the offering of all necessities to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks for three months? You are sitting listlessly and not even preparing umbrellas.'
