He attended. He did what had to be done. Understanding that "there is no other way than this," and understanding that the Dharma he taught was good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning, beautiful words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and only revealed these things. After hearing this, he thought: "It is good to see such a Shramana and Brahmin, it is good to approach them, it is good to respectfully serve them." So he entered a chariot with a thoroughbred horse, all white, surrounded by a group of Brahmin boys, with the Brahmin boys looking ahead, holding golden pots and bowls filled with food, and came from Otala. To see and respectfully serve the Blessed One, he went to the Blessed One's residence. He rode the chariot as far as it was rideable, and then got off the chariot and entered the Jetavana on foot. The Brahmin, the son of Otala, like a great Sala tree, went to where the Blessed One was, and together with the Blessed One, engaged in various conversations that were pleasing and delightful, and then sat down to one side. After sitting to one side, the Brahmin, the son of Otala, like a great Sala tree, said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Gautama, these five faculties, each with different realms and different objects, each experiences its own realm and object, and does not experience other realms and objects, such as: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty. What is it that experiences the realms and objects of these faculties? And what is their guide? Brahmin, these five faculties, each with different realms and different objects, such as: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty, the realms and objects of these faculties are experienced by the mind. And what they rely on is also the mind. Venerable Gautama, what does the mind rely on? Brahmin, the mind relies on memory. Venerable Gautama,

What is the support of mindfulness? Brahmin, the support of mindfulness is the four close placements of mindfulness. O Gautama, what is the support of the four close placements of mindfulness? Brahmin, the support of the four close placements of mindfulness is the seven branches of enlightenment. O Gautama, what is the support of the seven branches of enlightenment? Brahmin, the support of the seven branches of enlightenment is knowledge and liberation. O Gautama, what is the support of knowledge and liberation? Brahmin, the support of knowledge and liberation is nirvana. O Gautama, what is the support of nirvana? Brahmin, it is too much, it is too much, one cannot grasp the end of all questions. In my presence, the practice of celibacy approaches nirvana for the sake of completely ending suffering and reaching the end of suffering, and one practices with nirvana as the ultimate goal. Then, the Brahmin Otala's son thought: What harm can I do to him? He had previously heard that if the ascetic Gautama, together with his monastic community of disciples, made offerings and then prayed, everything he thought and prayed for would be obtained separately. Then, the Brahmin Otala's son rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed in the direction of the Blessed One. He said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if tomorrow you, together with the community of monks, would be willing to accept my oily food offering, please grant your permission. From "after the offering was finished, he paid homage and knew that the alms bowl had been moved" to the end, it was as before. He took a very low seat and, sitting before the Blessed One, began to make a perverse prayer, thinking: May all the ascetics, sons of the Shakyas, whom I have fed and offered food to, become my oxen. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thought of the Brahmin Otala's son with his mind, said to the Brahmin Otala's son: Brahmin, that unwholesome thought that you have generated will not be accomplished. For all these monks have exhausted rebirth, generate another thought.
