Having cut off everything, asked the Buddha Bhagavan: Venerable Nanda the Cowherd and his five hundred attendants, what deeds did they do to be born among the cowherds? And having renounced in the Bhagavan's teachings, having abandoned all afflictions, and having directly realized the fruit of Arhat? What deeds did the son of the gods who used to make frogs do, so that he was born as a frog and saw the truth? The Bhagavan said: Monks, as before, 'It is the deeds that he himself has done and accumulated that will bring about the results,' and even 'It will become a result for sentient beings.' Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious kalpa, when the life expectancy of beings was twenty thousand years, a teacher named Light Protector appeared in the world, and he resided near the Deer Park where the hermits spoke in the city of Varanasi. As before. In his teachings, Nanda the Cowherd renounced, was a master of the three pitakas, a speaker of the Dharma, confident in reason and liberation, possessed five hundred attendants, and was skilled in the law of debate. He pacified the disputes that arose in the Sangha. At that time, there were two arrogant monks who did not come to him many times. At other times, the two had a dispute with each other, and for that reason, the two came to him, prostrated at his feet, and said: We two have had such a dispute, please pacify it. He thought: If I only pacify the dispute between these two, it is meaningless, and these two will come again later. So, he gathered all the Sangha and discussed the dispute in the Sangha, but did not make a judgment. The next day, he had some doubts about Lior (place name), so he went there. After that, the two said, "Stop him," and then discussed the dispute in the Sangha, and then the Sangha pacified the dispute. When the monk who was the master of the three pitakas came back from Lior, having relieved the fatigue of the road, and was with the co-residents and attendants, he asked: Are the dispute and the two disputants not coming for the time being? Those people said: Preceptor, those two

That dispute has been pacified. By whom was it pacified? By the Sangha. How was it done? They spoke in detail, and those with life did not know that it arose from harsh language, so the dispute was pacified like that of cowherds. They also said in agreement that the Khenpo was the same, that the dispute was pacified like that of cowherds. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the monk who held the three baskets was none other than the cowherd Gawa himself. The five hundred who lived with him and were close to him were none other than these five hundred cowherds. Because he had spoken the word "cowherd" to the Sangha of the hearers of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, and those who lived with him and were close to him also agreed, the ripening of that karma caused him to be born as five hundred retinues and cowherds for five hundred lifetimes. Because he became skilled in the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, and what is and is not, by reading and reciting, now he and his five hundred retinues have renounced in my teaching, abandoned all defilements, and realized Arhatship. Monks, in the past, the son of the gods who acted as a frog also became a renunciate monk in the scriptures of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa alone. While traveling, he arrived at a monastery at the foot of a mountain. In the first watch of the night, he sat in the lotus position and began to practice familiarizing his mind. When the reciting monks began to recite, since the thorn of meditation is sound, and that sound could not make his mind one-pointed, he thought: Let them recite, I should sit in the middle watch. So he got up and sat in the middle watch. When the other monks recited, he thought: I should sit in the last watch. So he got up and sat in the last watch. When the others recited, since he was not free from desire, a strong entanglement arose, and he said:

They said, "These monks of Light Treasury make croaking sounds like frogs." Monks, what do you think? That renunciate monk is the very son of the gods who used to be a frog. Because he spoke the word "frog" to the hearers of the Perfectly Awakened Light Treasury, the ripening of that action caused him to be born as a frog for five hundred lifetimes, and even now he is still born as a frog. Because he had pure faith in me, he was born among the gods of the Four Great Kings. Because he practiced pure conduct under the Perfectly Awakened Light Treasury, he has now seen the truth. Monks, therefore, the ripening of black actions is purely black, so one should strive. Monks, you should train in such a way. Thus he spoke, as above. Then, the Blessed One crossed the Ganges River, and there five hundred swans, fish, and turtles surrounded him. The Blessed One taught them the Dharma in three sentences: "Good sirs, know that all conditioned things are impermanent, all dharmas are without self, and nirvana is peace, so have pure faith in me, and in any case, be free from desire for the animal realm." They thought to themselves, "It is not our share to eat food after we have heard the three sentences of Dharma from the Blessed One." So they stopped eating, and because the element of fire was strong in the animal realm, they passed away and died, and were born among the gods of the Four Great Kings. By nature, not long after a son or daughter of the gods is born, three thoughts arise: from where did they die, where were they born, and by what action? When they looked, they saw that they had died from the animal realm and were born among the gods of the Four Great Kings, and filled the entire space with Mandara flowers, illuminating the vicinity of the Blessed One and the Ganges River.
