Having fainted, he accomplished all deeds. In the enemy territory, with five hundred monks lacking two, they partook of rotten food together. The venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana partook of nectar. The Blessed One said: Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by the Tathagata himself in previous lifetimes, from "named" to "becoming a result for sentient beings," are as previously stated. Monks, in the past, when beings lived to be eighty thousand years old, a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, Supreme, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Vipashyin, appeared in the world. He and his retinue of eighty thousand monks resided near the palace of a king named Kinsman. At that time, in the palace of King Kinsman, there was a Brahmin who had a group of five hundred recite the secret mantras of the Brahmins, and the whole world especially revered, served, respected, and offered to him, and regarded him as worthy of offerings. From the moment the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin arrived at the palace of King Kinsman, no one revered, served, respected, or offered to him anymore. Moreover, he became extremely jealous of the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin and his Shravaka Sangha. As many monks, both learners and non-learners, as there were, would rise early, don their lower robes, and, carrying their bowls and Dharma robes, enter the palace of King Kinsman for alms. When the Brahmin saw them returning with their bowls filled with various flavored vegetables and rice, he asked: O monks, what kind of alms have you obtained? Because they were of an upright nature, they told him the truth. That one, being of a jealous nature, could not bear it, and called the Brahmin children and said: These shaven-headed ascetics are vegetables

It is not appropriate to eat various delicious foods and fine rice, but it is appropriate to eat rotten barley. They also agreed and said, 'The Khenpo is like that, these shaven-headed practitioners should not enjoy various delicious foods and fine rice, but should enjoy rotten barley.' At that time, there were two good Brahmin children who were faithful and had good intentions, and they said to the Khenpo, 'Do not say that, these are great beings, they should enjoy the nectar of the gods, and should not enjoy rotten barley.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who slandered the assembly of the Tathagata Vipaśyin was myself. The two Brahmin children who were less than five hundred were these two monks who were less than five hundred. The two good Brahmin children, who were faithful and had good intentions, were the monks Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. With a malicious mind, I uttered harsh words to the Śrāvaka disciples and non-disciples of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipaśyin, and the two Brahmin children who were less than five hundred agreed, and the two who did not agree, all the ripening of those karmas, caused the Tathagata to eat rotten barley with the monks who were less than five hundred in the borderland of the enemy. Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana enjoyed the nectar of the gods. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely dark karma is completely dark,' and 'You should strive to practice completely bright karma, monks, you should train in that way.' Until the above is said. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda, 'Ānanda, let us go to Chukagava.' The venerable Ānanda replied, 'Venerable, as you wish.' Then, the Blessed One took the five lands from the south and traveled to Chukagava, and after arriving at Chukagava, resided on the bank of the Ganges River in Chukagava. Then,

In a moment, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, that monk said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how can I hear a concise Dharma from the Blessed One, and then dwell alone in solitude, diligently, earnestly, and self-sacrificingly? When dwelling alone in solitude, diligently, earnestly, and self-sacrificingly, for what reason do sons of good families shave their hair and beards, put on saffron robes, and go forth from home to homelessness, solely on the basis of pure faith, so that in this very life, having realized and attained the unsurpassed end of the holy life through their own direct knowledge, they understand that birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, and there is no further existence? Please explain such a Dharma concisely and well." As he said this, the Blessed One looked towards where the Ganges River was, and the Blessed One saw the current of the Ganges River carrying a large tree. Having seen it, he said to the monk: "Monk, did you see the current of the Ganges River carrying a large tree?" "Venerable one, I saw it." "If this does not run aground on this shore, does not run aground on the far shore or in the middle, is not pulled onto the dry land, is not seized by humans or non-humans, does not sink into a whirlpool, and does not become rotten, then, monk, that large tree will gradually incline towards the ocean, flow towards the ocean, and merge into the ocean. In the same way, if you, monk, do not cling to this shore, and do not become rotten, then, monk, you will gradually incline towards Nirvana, flow towards Nirvana, and merge into Nirvana." "Venerable one, I do not understand, what is this shore? What is the far shore? What is the obstruction in the middle? What is being pulled onto the dry land? What is being seized by humans? What is being seized by non-humans? What is sinking into a whirlpool? What is becoming rotten? Blessed One,
