Having said this, (the Blessed One) prayed: Blessed One, if you would be pleased to grant permission to come to my place tomorrow to offer alms together with the Sangha of monks. Then, the Blessed One thought: If I do not grant even one meal to this (person), the king, the Brahmin fire-giver, may vomit blood and die, and that situation exists. After thinking this, the Blessed One did not say anything, which meant he granted permission. Then, the king, the Brahmin fire-giver, knowing that the Blessed One had granted permission by not saying anything, bowed his head to his feet and left the presence of the Blessed One, went to his place, and said to the ministers: Wise ones, what good method is there to ensure that all this food is enjoyed by the Buddha and the Sangha of monks? They said: Gods, if all this food is spread on the ground and the monks tread on it with their feet, then it will be completely enjoyed. He instructed those who lived on leftovers: Wise ones, spread all the food, no matter how much there is, all over the ground! They spread everything all over the ground. Then, from that night onwards, the king, the Brahmin fire-giver, prepared clean and virtuous food and drink, and so on, until the Blessed One sat on the prepared seat for the monks' lunch, as before. Soon, an old monk became displeased

Brahmins and householders will scold, quarrel, and insult if food and drink are placed on the ground and trampled upon. Therefore, a monk should not trample on food and drink with his feet. If he does, he will commit a serious offense. Then, King Brahmin Mesbyin, knowing that the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were living comfortably, took clean and prepared food and drink with his own hands and satisfied them. From "saluting, knowing that the bowl was full, he took a very low cushion and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma" to the end, it is the same as before. Then, the Blessed One correctly instructed King Brahmin Mesbyin with Dharma-related words, causing him to understand correctly, praise correctly, and rejoice correctly. In various ways, he correctly instructed him with Dharma-related words, causing him to understand correctly, praise correctly, and rejoice correctly, and then he rose from his seat and departed. Then, many monks, after the three summer months had passed, put on their Dharma robes and went to where the Blessed One was. They bowed to the Blessed One's feet with their heads and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, many monks said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, we have spent three summer months in enemy border areas, and Venerable One, the huts are about to collapse." Monks, do not destroy the huts. The longer the huts remain, the more merit the donors will accumulate, and the more merit will increase. These four things should be recognized as the common cause of merit accumulation for donors and patrons, the common cause of accumulating virtue, and the basis of happiness. What are these four? A monk who is disciplined and abides in virtuous Dharma, dwells in a monastery, and physically realizes and perfects the immeasurable concentration of mind.

Therefore, from that place's foundation, it should be known that the giver and the patron have a common cause of merit, a common cause of virtue, and an immeasurable basis of happiness. Just like a monastery, Dharma robes, alms, and dwellings are the same, possessing a common cause of merit, a common cause of virtue, and these four bases of happiness. Regarding the measure of merit of the giver and the patron who possess these, it cannot be said that it is only this much, whether it is merit, or the fruit of merit, or the maturation of the fruit of merit. However, because the merit is vast, it is counted among what is called a "great accumulation of merit." For example, just like these five great rivers, namely the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Sarayu, the Abode River, and the Great River, they flow and merge together. Regarding the amount of water there, it cannot be said that it is a drop of water, or a pot of water, or a hundred pots of water, or a thousand pots of water, or a hundred thousand pots of water. However, because there is much water, it is easy to be counted among what is called a "great collection of water." Similarly, regarding the measure of merit of the giver and the patron who possess a common cause of merit, a common cause of virtue, and these four bases of happiness, it cannot be said that it is only this much, whether it is merit, or the fruit of merit, or the maturation of the fruit of merit. However, because the merit is vast, it is counted among what is called a "great accumulation of merit." Just as the auspicious and pure ocean, with comfortable shores, a source of jewels, a supreme ocean, relied upon by crowds of people and wild animals, where rivers flow and gather from various directions. Similarly, for those who give clothes and food, who give bedding, cushions, and mats, the stream of merit will gather from everywhere, just as rivers flow into the ocean. The monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha Bhagavan: "Venerable Bhagavan, what kind of activity did you perform, such that with the accumulation of merit from cutting off hands, feet, heads, etc., you satisfied the beggars, and for the sake of sentient beings in countless eons, you...
