Having donned the saffron robe, one goes forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith. What are the four? They are: being overcome by old age, being overcome by illness, being overcome by relatives, and being overcome by possessions. O Land Protector, what is being overcome by old age? Here, a son of good family, having reached old age, thinks to himself: 'Now that I have reached old age, even if I possess some desires, it is not easy to enjoy them; needless to say, if I do not possess them. Rather, I will shave my hair and beard, don the saffron robe, and go forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith.' Thus, overcome by the exhaustion of old age, he shaves his hair and beard, dons the saffron robe, and goes forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith. This is called being overcome by old age. O wise Land Protector, if one is not overcome by the exhaustion of old age, but shaves his hair and beard, dons the saffron robe, and goes forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith, why is that? The wise Land Protector is a young man, in the prime of youth, with black hair, endowed with youthful vigor. When he is engaged in play, joy, delight, adornment, and striving for pleasure, his relatives, with tearful eyes and sorrowful faces, reluctantly watch him shave his hair and beard, don the saffron robe, and go forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith. What did the wise Land Protector know, see, hear, or understand that he shaved his hair and beard, donned the saffron robe, and went forth from home to homelessness solely through pure faith? I do not approve of this, it is unbearable. O wise Land Protector, what is being overcome by illness? Here, a son of good family, suffering from illness, pain, and severe disease, thinks to himself: 'Because I am suffering from illness, pain, and severe disease, even if I possess some desires, it is not easy to enjoy them; needless to say, if I do not possess them. Rather, I will shave my hair and beard, don the saffron robe...'
