The Kimpila Section. The Kimpila Section. Summary: Kimpila and Serpent Umbrella, Mathura and Protector of the Land, Elephant City and Great City, Srugna and the Brahmin City, Black City Rohita, Possessing Light, and likewise, He who Increases Joy, in the assembly, made this true declaration. The Blessed One went to Kimpila and stayed in the forest of Kimpila. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Kimpila: Kimpila, I will explain to you the meditation based on the four close placements of mindfulness. Listen well, pay close attention, and keep it in mind, and I will explain. When he had spoken thus, the venerable Kimpila remained silent. This was said a second and third time as well. Then, the venerable Ananda said to the venerable Kimpila: Venerable Kimpila, the Teacher is speaking to you! Venerable Ananda, I am aware. Venerable Gautama, I am fully aware. Then, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, the time has come. Sugata, the time has come. If the Blessed One would explain to the monks the meditation based on the four close placements of mindfulness, the monks, having heard it, would surely uphold it. Ananda, therefore, listen well, pay close attention, and keep it in mind, and I will explain. Here, whatever monk, called village and town, if mindfully breathing in, then he trains, saying, "Mindfully breathing in," and so on, until observing cessation and breathing out, he trains, as before. When a noble disciple mindfully breathes in, then he trains, saying, "Mindfully breathing in," and so on, until the bodily process is greatly calmed, observing the body in the body and breathing out, he trains, as before. At that time, the noble disciple dwells observing the body in the body. At that time, when the noble disciple dwells, he knows that there is internal mental activity. Ananda, for example, at the crossroads of a great road, a mound of dust might be built, and then from the east

If a rider, or a palanquin bearer, or a chariot traveler comes from a certain direction, what do you think, Ananda? Will the earthen stupa be destroyed? Venerable, it will. Similarly, when a noble disciple breathes in mindfully, from "breathes in mindfully" to "knows that inner attention exists," it is as before. When a noble disciple experiences joy, from "experiences joy" to "the activities of the mind are thoroughly subdued, observing feelings in feelings and exhaling," it is as before. At that time, when the noble disciple abides, he knows that inner attention exists. For example, Ananda, if an earthen stupa were built at a major crossroads, and then a rider, or a palanquin bearer, or a chariot traveler comes from the south, from "comes from the south" to "observing feelings in feelings," it is as before. At that time, when the noble disciple abides, he knows that inner attention exists. When a noble disciple experiences the mind, intensely joyful mind, equanimous mind, liberated mind, and breathes in, he learns to breathe in with a liberated mind; when he breathes out with a liberated mind, he learns to breathe out with a liberated mind, he observes the mind in the mind. When the noble disciple abides, he knows that inner attention exists, and it can be exemplified that it is the same from the west. Because both greed and displeasure for the body, feelings, and mind have disappeared, he observes the Dharma in the Dharmas and abides in equanimity. At that time, when the noble disciple abides, he knows that inner attention exists. For example, if an earthen stupa were built at a major crossroads, and then a rider, or a palanquin bearer, or a chariot traveler comes from the north, what do you think, Ananda? Will the earthen stupa be destroyed? Venerable, it will. From "comes from the north" to "thus observing the Dharma in the Dharmas," it is as before. At that time, the noble disciple abides

Knowing that Pana had attention in his mind. Ananda, thus relying on the four close placements of mindfulness, one meditates. Then, the Blessed One went to a mountain called Rivo. There on Rivo Mountain, the great uncle of the venerable Maudgalyayana, who had become a renunciate among the hermits, was to be tamed by the venerable Maudgalyayana's son. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Maudgalyayana's son: Maudgalyayana's son, contemplate your uncle. The venerable one obeyed the command, and the venerable Maudgalyayana's son listened to the Blessed One's words, and knowing the time for his taming, began to enter the hermits' dwelling place. Then, the hermit said: Ascetic, stay! Do not enter the dwelling place of the Brahmins. He said: I am also a Brahmin. The hermit said in verse: Brahmin, you have no broom, nor do you have a ladle. You are not a head-touching fire worshipper. Why do you call yourself a Brahmin? The venerable Maudgalyayana's son also said in verse: Brahmin, I know shame. The broom and ladle are wisdom itself. The constant flow of water is faith. I am the general ladle. Truth is my fire offering, well placed within. With correct discipline and taming, I perform burning day and night. Even if that were the case, the head-touching ascetic would not find an opportunity here. Then, the venerable Maudgalyayana's son sent forth a violent wind and rain, went near a lake, and stayed relying on a tree. Then, a retinue of the dragon king Nanda and near-Nanda lived there, and they thought: This is the noble Maudgalyayana's son, who should be regarded as a guru by both the dragon king Nanda and near-Nanda. I should strive to make offerings to him. So, the dragon came out of its dwelling and wrapped itself around the body of the venerable Maudgalyayana's son seven times, and from above made a great hood of heads and stayed. The nature of the hermits is that if they do not contemplate suffering, they will fall away from the dharma of the hermits, so then the hermit thought like this.
