The venerable Ānanda, having joined his palms, asked the Blessed One: "Adorned with a thousand colors." From "Ānanda, it is so, it is so" in between, as previously stated. Ānanda, the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, do not smile without a reason or cause. Ānanda, did you see the Brahmin praising the Tathāgata with verses? Blessed One, I saw it. With this root of virtue, he will not fall into twenty kalpas of bad destinies, but will transmigrate among gods and humans, and in future lives, future births, future bodies, and future self-essences, he will be called 'Worthy of Praise, Self-Born Buddha.' The monks arose with doubts and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, look at this Brahmin praising the Blessed One with a single verse, and the Blessed One's prophecy of his own enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Monks, not only now, but in the past he also praised me with a single verse, so I gave him five excellent villages. Listen well, keep it in mind, and I will tell it. Monks, in the past, in the city of Vārāṇasī, there was a king named Brahma-datta, who was wealthy, prosperous, happy, and had a good harvest, filled with many people, and he ruled the kingdom, and he especially loved poetry. In Vārāṇasī, there was another Brahmin poet, and a Brahmin woman said to him: Brahmin, the cold season has come, go before the king and say some appropriate good words, and perhaps you will get some help to avoid the cold. He went, and just as he did, the king came out riding an elephant. The Brahmin thought: Should I praise the king, or should I praise the sacred elephant? He thought: This sacred elephant is loved and liked by all the world, and especially by the king, so it is best to praise the sacred elephant first.

Thinking to praise, he spoke in verse: Like the flesh of the body of the earth-protecting son, the form endowed with excellent marks is so perfect. Color and size make the body's form excellent. Auspicious elephant king, may you receive the utmost praise! Then the king, full of joy, spoke in verse: My elephant is lovely and delightful, captivating people's eyes and creating joy. You have spoken words of praise for it, I will give you five of the best villages. Monks, that noble elephant of that time was none other than myself. The Brahmin of that time was this very Brahmin. Even then, he praised me with a single verse, so I gave him five of the best villages. Now, he has praised me with a single verse, so I have again prophesied his enlightenment. Having gone to the great city, in the great city, up to the place called the "Seat of the Four Buddhas," it was proclaimed as before. When he went to Suknagara, in Suknagara there was a Brahmin named Brahmin Autonomy, who, puffed up with appearance, youth, and learning, proclaimed and declared that there was no one like him. The Blessed One was also in another place, in the midst of the community of monks, seated on a prepared seat, teaching the Dharma. The Brahmin named Brahmin Autonomy heard that the ascetic Gautama had come to Suknagara, and he thought to himself: I have heard that the ascetic Gautama is handsome, beautiful, and pleasing to behold. Is he more handsome than I? Or should I go and see as if it were not so? When he came, he saw the body of the Blessed One, completely adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, the rays surpassing a thousand suns, perfect like a moving mountain of jewels. Having seen him, he thought: The ascetic Gautama is more handsome than I, but his height is not much taller than mine. So he began to look up at the crown of the Blessed One, and no matter how high a place he climbed
