Everyone gathered at the place of offering, and the Blessed One, please consider that now is the time. Then, the Blessed One went to the place of offering, and upon arriving, sat on the seat that had been prepared in the midst of the community of monks. Then, the Brahmin Lotus Heart, realizing that the Buddha and the community of monks were comfortably seated on the prepared seats, offered clean and blessed food and drink from his own hands, satisfying them. In various ways, he offered clean and blessed food and drink from his own hands, satisfying them. After the Blessed One had finished eating, he put away his bowl, and knowing that the bowl was full, he took a very low seat and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One rejoiced in the Brahmin Lotus Heart's generosity with this verse of rejoicing: The fire sacrifice is the best of all sacrifices, the sun god is the best of combinations, the king is the best of men, the ocean is the best of all rivers, the moon is the lord of all stars, the sun is the lord of all luminaries, above, below, and directly, however many beings exist, in the world including the gods, the best of speakers is the perfectly enlightened Buddha. At that time, when the Brahmin Lotus Heart was making the dedication of merit, an old woman was eating sesame oil. The Brahmin Lotus Heart saw that old woman eating sesame oil while he was making the dedication of merit. Having seen this, he said to the Blessed One: Are all the Shravakas pleasing to the wise Gautama? This Brahmin is uncertain, some please, some do not please. O Gautama, some desire the Dharma, some desire sesame oil. O Gautama, is my disciple, the Brahmin maiden, lovely? Has the Brahmin come? Has the wise Gautama conversed with her? The Brahmin has done so. Gautama, for that reason, please tell me in detail all that you discussed with her. Then, the Blessed One with the Brahmin maiden

All these words were spoken to the Brahmin Lotus Heart. Then, the Brahmin Lotus Heart said this to the Blessed One: 'O Gautama, the Brahmin boy Unpleasant does not understand the nature of actions. O Gautama, please forgive the Brahmin boy Unpleasant, the Brahmin is patient.' Wise Gautama, when I see you entering the chariot, or holding the reins, or raising the whip, or speaking loudly, does the Brahmin Lotus Heart prostrate to me, is the harm small, is the fear less, is he alive, is the action light, does he enjoy strength and happiness? Please understand my greetings in this way. Wise Gautama, when I see you walking from the middle of the street, or taking off your shoes, or bending down, or stretching out your arms, please accept my prostration, wise Gautama, until enjoyment, it is the same as before. Wise Gautama, when I see you in the crowd, or shaking, or sitting on the mat, or coveting the headdress, please accept my prostration, wise Gautama, until enjoyment, it is the same as before. O Gautama, why is this? Because Brahmins obtain enjoyment through fame, they only enjoy through fame.' Then, the Blessed One thought: 'Alas, this Brahmin Lotus Heart has a very great arrogance, I should teach the Dharma in order to make him abandon his arrogance.' Thinking thus, then the Blessed One, with words in accordance with the Dharma, truly revealed, truly praised, truly guided, and truly delighted the Brahmin Lotus Heart. The first words in accordance with the Dharma spoken by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are like this: the words of generosity, the words of morality, the words of heaven, the benefits of desires, the faults, the afflictions, the purification, the liberation, the merits of solitude, and the Dharma of the aspects of purification, are extensively...

I make it perfectly clear and well revealed. When the Blessed One saw that his heart was joyful, his mind was virtuous, his mind was content, his mind was free from defilements, he was capable, endowed with power, and able to know all the most excellent dharmas, at that time, the most excellent dharma taught by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, namely, the four noble truths—suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path—were extensively revealed. For example, just as a white cloth is without stain and clean, capable of being dyed, and if placed in dye, it can be well dyed, so too, the Brahmin Lotus Treasury, while sitting on his seat, realized the four noble truths, namely, suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Thereafter, the Brahmin Lotus Treasury saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, knew the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended hesitation, transcended doubt, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having gained fearlessness in the dharmas taught by the Teacher, he rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, and with palms joined, bowed towards where the Blessed One was. He said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, I have become noble, I have manifestly become noble. I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. I beseech the Blessed One to accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, even at the cost of my life, I will not abandon taking refuge, I have deep faith in this." Thereafter, the Brahmin Lotus Treasury was greatly pleased with what the Blessed One had said, rejoiced and praised it. He bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with his head, and then rose from his seat and departed. Thereafter, the Blessed One addressed the monks, "Monks, the time has come when the Brahmin Lotus Treasury will be ridiculed. Therefore, if someone offers green barley, a monk should not eat it, as it will become a serious food obstacle. The Blessed One traveled to the Seven Leaves, and at the Seven Leaves, as before, he extensively arranged the seats of the four Buddhas. The Blessed One traveled through the country of Kosala.
