Offer it! Then, she developed even greater faith, thinking: The Blessed One's mind knows my mind! Thinking this, with intense faith, she offered alms food to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One smiled. According to the Dharma, whenever the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, smile, from "that time" to "the treasure chest sinks," it is as previously stated. Then, the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Without cause, without condition..." up to "smiled," it is as previously stated. "Ananda, did you see that Brahmin girl who, having developed faith, offered me alms food?" "Venerable one, I saw her." "Ananda, that Brahmin girl, with this root of virtue, for thirteen kalpas will not fall into evil realms, and will connect her lives in gods and humans, transmigrating, in future lives, future birthplaces, future bodies, and the future attainment of self-nature, will become a Pratyekabuddha named Extremely Good Self-Born." Everywhere it was proclaimed: A certain Brahmin girl, having developed faith, offered a portion of alms food to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One predicted that she would attain enlightenment. Her husband, who had gone to the forest to find flowers and sacrificial firewood, heard: My wife offered a portion of alms food to the ascetic Gautama, and the ascetic Gautama predicted that she would attain enlightenment. Having heard this, he felt unbearable and went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he said to the Blessed One: "Wise Gautama, did you come to my house?" "Brahmin, I did." "Wise Gautama, my maid offered a portion of alms food, and you predicted that she would attain enlightenment, is that so?" "Brahmin, it is true." "O Gautama, you renounced the kingdom of a Chakravartin to become a renunciate, and now, just for the sake of alms food, how can you speak a deliberate lie? Who would believe you that such a small seed could produce such a fruit?" "Brahmin, therefore I ask you, please answer truthfully as you can endure."

Brahmin, what do you think? Have you seen any wonderful and marvelous things? O Gautama, for a moment leave aside other wonderful and marvelous things. Listen for a moment to the wonderful and marvelous thing I have seen here at this Nyagrodha. O Gautama, to the east of this Nyagrodha there is a large Nyagrodha tree, and that is why this village is called Nyagrodha. Beneath it there is room for five hundred carts without touching each other. Brahmin, how big is the seed of that Nyagrodha? Is it perhaps as big as a field? O Gautama, no. Is it as big as a ploughshare? As big as an oil-pressing wheel? As big as a cartwheel? As big as a cowhide? As big as a wood-apple? As big as a kapittha fruit? O Gautama, no. O Gautama, it is about a quarter the size of a mustard seed. Brahmin, who would believe you that such a big tree grows from such a small seed? Wise Gautama, whether you believe it or not, it is what I have seen with my own eyes. O Gautama, if one sows fresh, undamaged seeds in a large, fertile field that is free from yellow spots, saline soil, and if rain falls on it from time to time, then this large Nyagrodha tree will grow. Then the Blessed One spoke about what had happened in verse: Brahmin, just as you see, The field and the seed are evident. Likewise, the ripening of karma, Is evident to the Tathagata. Just as you, Brahmin, see the seed, Is small and the tree is very large. Brahmin, I too see the tiny seed, And the great fruit that comes from it. Then the Blessed One stretched out his tongue from his mouth, covering his entire face as far as his hairline, and said to the Brahmin: Brahmin, what do you think? Would someone who stretches out his tongue from his mouth, covering his entire face, knowingly tell a lie even for the sake of a thousand wheel-turning monarchs? O Gautama, no. The Blessed One said in verse: My tongue is born of truth and without deceit, How could it speak what is untrue?

Will it change? Brahmin, as I have said, therefore, it should be understood that the Tathagata is like this. Then, the Brahmin developed great faith, and then, the Blessed One, knowing his thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature, from "the twenty high peaks, headed by the view of the perishable aggregates, accumulated from beginningless time, were destroyed by the vajra of wisdom, and the fruit of entering the stream was realized," until "Venerable, I have attained, I have realized," it is all as before. I take refuge in the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks, I request you to accept me as a lay follower, from now on, until the end of my life, even if I sacrifice my life, I deeply believe that I will take refuge. Then, the Brahmin was very happy and pleased with what the Blessed One said, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One.
