Now it will be seen. For example, not far from a town or city, there is a deep pond, with clear, clean, and very clear water. A person with eyes sits on the bank and can clearly see gravel, pebbles, fish, turtles, fish skins, or conches. Similarly, a mind that is thus composed, completely pure, thoroughly cleansed, without defilements, free from near-defilements, upright, abiding in suitability, having attained immovability, from "not knowing another existence beyond this" as before. This is called wisdom, and combining the former foot with this, it is called wisdom and foot. Brahmin's son, for not having realized the unsurpassed wisdom and foot, to realize it, one should know there are four non-expedient ways. Which four? Here, some ascetics or Brahmins, not having realized this unsurpassed wisdom and foot, leave the city and go to the forest, build huts of branches and leaves and dwell there, saying, "We will live on roots and fruits." They live there on roots and fruits. Brahmin's son, one should know that this is the first non-expedient way for not having realized the unsurpassed wisdom and foot, to realize it. Brahmin's son, what do you think? Do you and your teachers agree with this first non-expedient way of unsurpassed wisdom and foot that I have spoken of? O Gautama, no. Brahmin's son, furthermore, some ascetics or Brahmins, not having realized this unsurpassed wisdom and foot, abandon the food of roots and fruits and go to a remote place, build huts of branches and leaves and dwell there, saying, "We will live on leaves." They live there on leaves. Brahmin's son, one should know that this is the second non-expedient way for not having realized the unsurpassed wisdom and foot, to realize it. Brahmin's son, furthermore, some ascetics or Brahmins, not having realized this unsurpassed wisdom and foot, they

If one has not yet realized, one abandons those foods of roots and fruits, and those foods of leaves, and goes completely to one place, making huts of branches and leaves and dwelling there. They will say, 'We should make the secret words into scriptures, and compile the Vedas.' They make those secret words into scriptures, and compile the Vedas. This, O Brahmin youth, is the third non-expedient means for a Brahmin youth who has not manifestly realized the unsurpassed wisdom and conduct, to manifestly realize it, and should be known. Furthermore, O Brahmin youth, some ascetics or Brahmins, when they have not realized this unsurpassed wisdom and conduct, regarding those foods of roots and fruits, and those foods of leaves, and the scriptures of secret words, and the compilation of the Vedas, they dwell from monasteries to the edge of villages, building four-doored houses and dwelling there. They think, 'Here we should give alms, perform meritorious deeds, and for the ascetics and Brahmins who come and arrive, we should give alms separately as much as we can.' This, O Brahmin youth, is the fourth non-expedient means for a Brahmin youth who has not manifestly realized the unsurpassed wisdom and conduct, to manifestly realize it, and should be known. O Brahmin youth, what do you think? Have you and your teachers seen those four non-expedient means that I have shown for not manifestly realizing the unsurpassed wisdom and conduct, but for manifestly realizing it?' 'No, O Gautama.' O Brahmin youth, since that is so, why do you say, 'Those Shakyas are base,' before you have fully possessed those four non-expedient means? Saying that the Shakyas are of a base lineage, saying that the Shakyas are base. O Brahmin youth, what do you think? The ancient Brahmin sages of the Brahmins, those who created secret words, who employed the Vedas, the ancient secret words they created, praised, chanted, and compiled, the Brahmins still chant and explain, such as: the Eighth, the Left Side, the Left Side Gods, Various Friends, Fire Burning, the Solar Race, Bharadvaja, Abode, Son of Taming, Abandoning Evil.

That is, do they live by building cities with deep pits and thorny cities like this, just like you and your teacher now? Oh, Gautama, no. Do they experience various sights of the top of the flag, the assembly of the army, and the deployment of the army like this, just like you and your teacher now? Oh, Gautama, no. Do they enter chariots full of white steeds like this, holding golden staffs and orbs, surrounded by groups of Brahmin children, with Brahmin children watching from the front, traveling through fields, coming and going, just like you and your teacher now? Oh, Gautama, no. Do they possess women who are respected and wear hair ornaments, receiving caresses, baths, and wipes from women whose arm hair is like peacock feathers and whose breasts are like gourds, just like you and your teacher now? Oh, Gautama, no. Do they stretch their legs and sleep until the sun rises with women who have golden armlets, wear golden necklaces, and are beautifully adorned, just like you and your teacher now? Oh, Gautama, no. Brahmin child, look! Your Khenpo also has faults. Brahmin child, when the Brahmin lotus heart essence is like King Prasenajit of Kosala, why can't one see the wise man who eats wobbly food like him in person, except for the obstruction of walls and curtains? Brahmin child, look! You yourself also have faults. Brahmin child, in the past, King Prasenajit of Kosala sat on his throne and said to a man, 'Do this and this kind of royal affair.' After doing those things, judge this and this kind of matter.' After saying that, the king got up from the throne and left. Then that man sat on the throne without the king and said to another man, 'Do this kind of royal affair.'
