and dwell in tree hollows and empty houses. It is acceptable whether one enters a monastery, a tree hollow, or an empty house. Sit in the lotus position, straighten the body, place mindfulness directly in front, and abandon craving for the world. Dwell many times with a mind free from craving, and completely purify the mind from craving. For the world, abandon harmful thoughts, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, and doubt. Transcend duality, transcend doubt, gain certainty in virtuous dharmas, and completely purify the mind from doubt. For example, a person borrows money and strives to complete various tasks. When those tasks are completed, he repays the debt and has enough money to support his wife. He thinks, "I borrowed money and strived to complete various tasks. Now those tasks are completed, I have repaid the debt, and I have enough money to support my wife." He becomes happier than before, and his mind is also happier. Or, for example, a sick person is severely ill and suffers greatly. He cannot digest food, and drinking water is harmful to his body. Later, at another time, he is not sick, is strong, and feels happy. He can digest food, and drinking water is not harmful to his body. He thinks, "Before, when I was sick, severely ill, and suffering greatly, I could not digest food, and drinking water was harmful to my body. Now, I am not sick, I am strong, and I feel happy. I can digest food, and drinking water is not harmful to my body." He becomes happier than before, and his mind is also happier. Or, for example, a person becomes a slave, is driven, forced to work, goes hungry, and has no freedom.

When I exist, I think like this: Like when I was a slave before, I was ordered around, whipped, starved, and had no freedom. Now that I am not a slave, I am not ordered around, not whipped, not starved, because I am free. Thinking like this, he becomes happier than before, and his mind becomes more peaceful. Again, for example, a person is imprisoned, his hands are tied behind his back, and he is tightly bound. Later, he is freed from that state and obtains immeasurable joy and happiness. He thinks like this: I was imprisoned before, my hands were tied behind my back, and I was tightly bound. Now, I am freed from that and obtain immeasurable joy and happiness. Thinking like this, his mind becomes more peaceful than before. Again, for example, a person obtains safety from fear and welcomes a good harvest from a year of bad harvests. He thinks like this: I have obtained safety from fear and welcomed a good harvest from a year of bad harvests. Thinking like this, he becomes happier and more joyful than before. Similarly, he truly sees that he has abandoned the five coverings, which are like debts, diseases, slaves, imprisonment, and fear. He abandons these five coverings, which make the mind full of afflictions, weaken wisdom, are in accordance with harmful things, and are not in accordance with Nirvana. Then, he is secluded from desires, secluded from sins and unwholesome dharmas, and in the presence of vitarka and vicara, he dwells in the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and has joy and happiness. For example, a bath attendant or a clever bath attendant apprentice puts fine bathing powder in a copper plate, wooden bowl, or cloth bag, repeatedly mixes it with water, and then removes impurities. In this way, the lump of bathing powder becomes moist and sticky, and is penetrated inside and out by moisture, so that it does not scatter or drip. Similarly, that bhikshu's body is manifestly moistened by the joy and happiness born of seclusion, completely moistened, completely filled, and completely penetrated. There is no place in his entire body that is not penetrated by the joy and happiness born of seclusion.
