Then, having bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, he sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, together with the Sangha of monks, I would like to offer robes, alms, bedding, medicine for sickness, and utensils for as long as I live. Blessed One, you will not refuse because of your compassion for sentient beings. Blessed One, please allow me to offer a meal." The Blessed One did not say anything to the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, and gave his consent. Then, the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, knowing that the Blessed One had given his consent by not speaking, rose from his seat, bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, and left. Then, the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, from that very night, until the Blessed One had finished his meal, put away his bowl, and so on, was as before. He took out a golden bird-shaped water bottle and began to pray to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, you have subdued the fierce nagas and the fierce yakshas. Venerable, this naga king named Somamedha has been harboring hatred towards us for a long time, creating hatred where there is no hatred, becoming an opponent where there is no opponent, creating harm where there is no harm, causing the crops that have grown and are growing to suffer loss. Blessed One, please hold compassion close and tame the naga king Somamedha well." The Blessed One did not say anything to the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, and gave his consent. Then, the Blessed One dedicated the merit to the son of the body, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, and then left, went to the temple, and sat down in the middle of the Sangha of monks on the seat that had been prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda,

Going north to subdue the Naga king Sogma Me. There are five benefits in the north, what are the five? Abundant flowers, abundant fruits, abundant water, easy to obtain alms, and an upright populace. Having said this, the Blessed One entered the monastery in order to enter into meditative absorption. Then, the son of the Body of Light, King Ajatasatru of Magadha, had the roads and cities from Rajagriha to the Ganges leveled, clearing away all the stones, tiles, and pebbles from the roads, sprinkling them with sandalwood water, arranging various fragrant incense burners, hanging many silk streamers, and building countless flower palaces in between. The Licchavis of Vaishali, on the other hand, had the roads and cities from the Ganges to Vaishali even more specially decorated. Then, the Blessed One arose from meditative absorption and said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, let us go to where Nalanda is. The Venerable Ananda replied: Blessed One, as you command. Then, as the Blessed One was traveling through the country of Magadha, he arrived at Nalanda and stayed in Nalanda, in the mango grove called Chaggaga Pavarika. At that time, there lived in Nalanda a wandering merchant named Dandapani, who was wealthy, large, and influential, and was one hundred and twenty years old. The Brahmins and householders of Nalanda respected him, regarded him as their teacher, drew pictures of him, made offerings to him, and revered him as an Arhat. Then, a god who was a former friend, minister, relative, and in-law of the wandering merchant Dandapani thought to himself: If I were to say to the wandering merchant Dandapani: O virtuous one, come! Practice the holy life in the presence of the Blessed One. But if he does not listen to me, then I will go to him and cause him to accept the questions in his heart. Then, that god went to where the wandering merchant Dandapani was, and having arrived, said to Dandapani:

He said to the reed merchant, 'O upright one, come here! Please make me fully understand the questions in my mind. How should one view someone who pretends to be a friend but is not? How should one recognize a friend who is like oneself? Why abandon? How to obtain freedom from illness? O upright one, may you practice celibacy in order to satisfy my mind by prophesying with words these questions of your mind that you have mentally gathered.' Having said this, he immediately disappeared. Then, the wandering reed merchant took the questions of his mind from that god, fully understood them, and went to where Light-Guardian Completer was. Having arrived, in the presence of Light-Guardian Completer, he mentally gathered the questions of his mind: 'How should one view someone who pretends to be a friend but is not?' up to 'How can one obtain freedom from illness?' It was all as before. Light-Guardian Completer also did not know or understand the questions of his mind that he had mentally gathered. Since he did not know or understand, what need was there to even mention answering? Then, the wandering reed merchant thought to himself, 'Light-Guardian Completer also does not know or understand the questions of my mind that he has mentally gathered. Since he does not know or understand, what need is there to even mention answering?' Thinking this, he went to where the wandering Black Forest Son, the son of the eloquent woman, the true victor, the undefeated disheveled-hair one, Katyayana's son Noga Katyayana, and the son of the naked one's kinsman were. Having arrived, in the presence of the naked one's kinsman, he mentally gathered the questions of his mind: 'How should one view someone who pretends to be a friend but is not?' Up to the naked one's kinsman, they also did not understand the questions of my mind that I had mentally gathered. Since they do not understand, what need is there to even mention answering?' It was all as before until the end. Then, the wandering reed merchant thought to himself, 'What use is such a renunciation to me, for those who cannot obtain a verbal prophecy of the questions of the mind that have been mentally gathered? I'
