The Chapter on Rājagṛha The Chapter on Rājagṛha Summary: Rājagṛha and Nālandā, the radiant staff and the city of red-purple, the Ganges River with piled clouds, and the great sound, vast and boundless. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Rājagṛha, in the Bamboo Grove, the Sanctuary for Squirrels. At that time, the youth Ajātaśatru, having been incited by Devadatta, killed his father, the Dharma-King who was endowed with Dharma, and having bound the diadem himself, ascended to the throne as king. At that time, he began to perform many acts of disrespect towards the Blessed One, and for the sake of killing him, he hid the elephant Nālāgiri and fierce man-eating dogs. Then his mother, the noble Vaidehi, said, "Son, do not commit acts of disrespect towards the Blessed One! The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are distressed by disrespect. They will depart from Rājagṛha and there will be harm. By the power of the Blessed One, the lands of Aṅga and Magadha are prosperous and delightful." The one with a corrupted heart said, "What, will those lands where the Blessed One is not be destroyed and emptied?" His mother tried to dissuade him in every way, but she was unable to stop him. The Blessed One thought, "This youth Ajātaśatru has accumulated many non-meritorious deeds. I will place him in a baseless faith for a while, but the time for that has not yet come, so I will go to Śrāvastī." Having thought this, the Blessed One, together with the community of disciples, traveled to where Śrāvastī was, and gradually traveling, he arrived at Śrāvastī. Having arrived at Śrāvastī, he stayed in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada in Śrāvastī. The border kings heard that Ajātaśatru had committed acts of disrespect towards the Blessed One, and that the Buddha, distressed by disrespect, had departed from Rājagṛha and gone to Śrāvastī. They thought, "For a while, that sinful king killed his father, the Dharma-King who was endowed with Dharma. Not content with that, he also committed acts of disrespect towards the Blessed One, who is worshipped by gods, demigods, and humans. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are distressed by disrespect, therefore the Blessed One departed from Rājagṛha and went to Śrāvastī."

Thinking that Ura would depose him from the kingdom, they consulted each other through messengers and came to a unanimous decision. They mobilized the fourfold army, consisting of elephant troops, cavalry, chariot troops, and infantry, and marched into Rajagriha, besieging and encamping there. The Naga king Sogamameda also sent down a stream of hail, ruining the remaining crops. Five hundred ascetic waters, springs, lakes, and ponds dried up, resulting in a famine. The remaining water sources were also ruined by the petty kingdoms on the borders. Then, Ajatasattu, overwhelmed by unbearable suffering, became weak, and non-humans seized the opportunity. Like throwing ashes on a wound, a plague of humans arose, leading to the carrying and dragging of corpses. Then, King Ajatasattu, tormented by hundreds of calamities, sat with his hand on his cheek, absorbed in thought. Then, Jivaka's mother said, 'Son, why are you so absorbed in thought?' Ajatasattu replied, 'Mother, hundreds of calamities have befallen me.' Jivaka's mother said, 'Son, didn't I tell you before not to disrespect the Bhagavan? Vinaya-vastu, Volume 26. The Buddhas, the Bhagavans, are ashamed of disrespect. Didn't I say that there would be calamities after the Bhagavan left Rajagriha? This is it.' Ajatasattu asked, 'Mother, what should I do?' Jivaka's mother replied, 'Son, ask the Bhagavan for forgiveness.' Ajatasattu said, 'Mother, I am afraid I cannot go before the Bhagavan.' Jivaka's mother said, 'Son, haven't you heard that the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, are the same towards sandalwood and axes, having abandoned anger and attachment? If someone were to chop off one arm of the Bhagavan with an axe, and another were to smear the other arm with the finest sandalwood, the Bhagavan would have neither attachment nor anger.' Then, Jivaka's mother's son, King Ajatasattu, said to a man, 'Hey, inner minister, come here. Go to where the Bhagavan is, and upon arriving, bow to the Bhagavan's feet with my words, and ask if he is well and if he has little suffering.'
