Such a deva or devi will generate three thoughts: From where did I die, where was I born, and by what karma? He observed that he had died from the animal realm and was born among the gods of the Four Great Kings, because he had generated great faith in the Bhagavan. Then, the deva who had previously done cleaning work thought: It is not appropriate for me to go to see the Bhagavan after the fast day has passed. In any case, I must go to see the Bhagavan before the fast day arrives. Then, the deva who had previously done cleaning work, wearing swaying, immaculate earrings and adorning his body with necklaces and garlands, that very night, with the flowers of the gods—utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and mandārava flowers—and with colors that far surpassed all others and were exceedingly magnificent, that night he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, he scattered flowers upon the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan. At that time, the power of the light of the deva who had previously done cleaning work illuminated the entire dwelling place of the sangha with great light. Vinaya-vastu, Volume 28. Then, the Bhagavan, knowing the thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature of the deva who had previously done cleaning work, taught him the Dharma corresponding to them, which would enable him to realize the Four Noble Truths individually. Having heard this, the deva who had previously done cleaning work, having shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregate of existence with the vajra of wisdom, directly realized the fruit of stream-entry, saw the truth, and exclaimed three times. He exclaimed: Venerable one, such benefit as this was not done for me by my mother, not by my father, not by my brothers, not by my own relatives and friends, not by the king, not by the gods, not by the previous deceased, not by the shramanas and brahmins, but it was done for me by the Bhagavan. He lifted me up from the hells of sentient beings, animals, and pretas, placed me among gods and humans, made me distant from samsara, and dried up the ocean of blood and tears.

Sa. Liberated from the mountain of bones. Destroyed the gates of evil destinies. Opened the gates of good destinies and liberation. The twenty high peaks of the mountain of viewing the world as pleasure, accumulated from beginningless time, were destroyed by the vajra of wisdom, and the fruit of entering the stream was manifestly attained. Monk, I have attained. I have attained. I take refuge in the Bhagavan, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks, I request you to accept me as a lay follower. From now on, until the end of my life, even if I sacrifice my life, I will have firm faith in taking refuge. Then, the son of the deva who was previously a craftsman, was overjoyed and rejoiced at what the Bhagavan said, just like a merchant who finds goods, a farmer who has a good harvest, a hero who wins on the battlefield, and a sick person who is completely freed from all diseases, the wealth that came before the Bhagavan with whatever wealth, returned to his own abode. Then, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, we will go to the place where Vaisali is. The monk replied: As you command. The venerable Ananda listened to the instructions of the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan departed from Sponga, traveled around, and arrived at Vaisali, and stayed in the mango grove of Vaisali. The guardian of the mango grove heard that the Bhagavan had departed from Sponga, traveled around, and arrived at Vaisali, and was staying in his own mango grove in Vaisali. Having heard this, he adorned himself with all kinds of ornaments, surrounded by a retinue of women, rode a good horse, and came out of Vaisali, and went before the Bhagavan in order to see and serve the Bhagavan. He rode as far as the ground where he could ride, then dismounted and entered the monastery on foot alone. At that time, the Bhagavan was teaching the Dharma while sitting in the midst of hundreds of thousands of monks. The Bhagavan saw the guardian of the mango grove from afar. Having seen him, he again said to the monks: The guardian of the mango grove, Pabi, will abide with diligence, mindfulness, and awareness.
