Thus he manifested, caused them to hold it thus, praised it thus, and made them rejoice thus, rising from his seat and departing. Then, the Blessed One went to the monastery and sat down on the seat that had been prepared in the midst of the community of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, among all meats, human meat is the most inferior. Therefore, a monk should not eat human meat. If a monk eats human meat, he commits a grave offense. Furthermore, I shall establish a rule of conduct for the resident monks of the Sangha. If a resident monk of the Sangha is distributing meat, he should ask what kind of meat it is. If the resident monk of the Sangha cannot discern it, then the second resident should discern it. If the resident monk of the Sangha does not properly take up and engage in the established rule of conduct, he will commit a serious offense. All the monks became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed Buddha. Venerable one, the attendant of the householder Great Giving has offered his share to this monk. This monk also, relying on Great Giving's mother, has abandoned all afflictions and directly realized Arhatship. The Blessed One said: Monks, it is not only now that this is so. Just as in the past, this person also offered his share to this monk, and this monk, relying on him, directly realized the five superknowledges. Listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a householder named Great Giving. His wife was named Great Giving's Mother. At that time, there was another Brahmin who was causing a gathering to recite, causing about five hundred Brahmin boys to recite the secret words of the Brahmins. The householder Great Giving developed faith in this, and he provided them with all necessities, together with their retinue. The householder Great Giving only showed respect to the Brahmin and his retinue. The conduct of that householder was to rise early and visit the sick, so the Brahmin's son

Once again, a sick person became seriously ill, and the doctor advised him to drink meat broth. Then, the householder Mahadatta went to the Brahmin boy, approached him, paid homage, and asked: Brahmin boy, what medicine did the doctor prescribe for you? He said: Drink meat broth. Then, the householder Mahadatta went home and said to his wife: The doctor has advised so-and-so Brahmin boy to drink meat broth, prepare it and send it over. She gave a girl some money and sent her to the market to buy it. On that very day, the king had a son, and he ordered an announcement to be made: No one should kill any living being. If anyone kills, they will be punished with death. Then, even with the money, no meat could be found in the market. Then, the girl told the wife of the householder Mahadatta in detail what had happened. The wife of the householder Mahadatta thought: We have undertaken all the needs of these Brahmins and their entourage, and if a Brahmin boy were to die for lack of medicine, that would not be good. Thinking this, she took a sharp knife, went into the house, cut a piece of flesh from her thigh, and gave it to the girl, saying: Child, make this meat into broth and take it to so-and-so Brahmin boy. The girl took it, and the Brahmin boy drank it and was healed. The Brahmin boy, knowing that the householder's wife had thus treated him with her own flesh, thought to himself: It is not right for me to enjoy what has been given in faith and remain idle. I must strive to enable my mother to attain what she has not attained, to understand what she has not understood, and to realize what she has not realized. Then, he went to a quiet place and realized the five supernormal powers. Monks, what do you think? The wife of the householder Mahadatta at that time was none other than the present wife of the householder Mahadatta. The Brahmin boy at that time was none other than this monk, and at that time also he treated that monk with his own flesh.

Through this, he also manifested the five supernormal knowledges. Even now, he reveres this monk with his own share. This monk also, relying on this, abandoned all defilements and manifested the Arhat. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely black actions is completely black. The ripening of completely white actions is completely white. The ripening of mixed actions is mixed. Monks, therefore, from now on, you should abandon completely black actions and mixed actions, and strive for completely white actions. Monks, you should train yourselves in such a way. The setting of the story is in Shravasti. At that time, King Prasenajit of Kosala had nine well-bred elephants. Because of the famine, Brahmins and householders began to eat elephant meat. The group of six monks, having put on their lower garments in the morning, took their bowls and robes and went to Shravasti for alms. When they entered the house of a certain householder who was having elephant meat cut and cooked, the householder's wife said: Venerables, there is nothing to offer here, please leave. They said: What is being cooked in this pot? Venerable, this is elephant meat, do you also eat elephant meat? Our livelihood depends on you, so if you eat it, please give us some too. After they were given some, they filled their bowls and came out, where they were seen by other monks who were also going for alms. Seeing them, they asked: Hey, group of six, what is filling your bowls? They said: We found some elephant meat. Do you also eat elephant meat? Venerables, there is a famine, if we cannot find anything else, should we starve to death? At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, the king has nine well-bred elephants, if the king hears that you have eaten elephant meat, then the gods, nagas, and humans who have great faith in you
