The monks requested, and the Blessed One instructed: "If a doctor says, 'This medicine is specifically for this disease, and no other medicine can cure it,' then raw meat should be offered." The monks did so, but they could not eat it. The Blessed One instructed: "It should be offered with a blindfold over the eyes." They offered it, and as soon as they removed the blindfold, the person saw the hand touching the meat, felt disgusted, and vomited. The Blessed One instructed: "Do not remove the blindfold immediately. Instead, first place clean food and drink before him, and only remove it when he has washed his hands." When he recovered, the monks asked the Blessed One if he could be ordained since he had recovered. The Blessed One instructed: "When he has recovered, he should be properly ordained and practice according to the precepts. Otherwise, enjoying the offerings will be a serious offense." The story took place in Rajagriha. Since the Venerable Pilindavatsa's ordination, he had been constantly ill and suffered much pain. The monks asked him, "Venerable, how is your illness?" He replied, "Venerable ones, I am constantly ill and suffer much pain, without a moment of peace." The monks asked, "Venerable, what did you carry before?" He replied, "I carried a medicine bag." The monks asked, "Why don't you carry it now?" He replied, "The Blessed One does not allow it." The monks asked the Blessed One about this. The Blessed One instructed: "Monks, in that case, allow the monks to carry a medicine bag." The monks put coarse roots, flowers, stems, and fruits into the medicine bag, and they all rotted. The Blessed One instructed: "They should be made into small packets or bundles and sewn onto the robe." Those medicines still rotted. The Blessed One instructed: "They should be dried from time to time." They dried the medicines in the sun, and as a result, the potency of the medicine decreased. The Blessed One instructed: "They should not be dried in the sun." They dried the medicines in the shade, but they still rotted. The Blessed One

The Buddha taught: Do not dry in the shade. They spread them out, and when it rained and the wind blew, they did not collect them. The Blessed One taught: They should be collected. When the Blessed One said they should be collected, they did not know who should collect them, and the Blessed One taught: Laypeople should collect them. If there are no laypeople, then novices should collect them. If there are no novices, then the monks themselves should collect them. If a monk collects them and they become mixed with (other things), (they) said they were mixed and did not eat them. The Blessed One taught: They should be separated and enjoyed, and there should be no regret about this. Whatever I have permitted for the sick should not be used in a normal state. If used, it will become a serious offense. The story takes place in Shravasti. A monk named Nanda-taru, who was always hesitant wherever he went, was known as Nanda-taru the Hesitant. One morning, he put on his robes, took his robes and bowl, and went to Shravasti to beg for alms, and then gradually went to the village where brown sugar was made. When he saw people mixing rice flour and brown sugar, he said: Wise ones, do not mix brown sugar and rice flour. Venerable, do you know of other mixing methods? I do not know of other mixing methods, but we need to consume at an improper time. Venerable, whether you consume at the proper time or the improper time is fine, but this mixing method is such that others do not mix it. At other times, the Sangha obtained brown sugar, but they did not consume it. Those who lived with him and the attendants said: Teacher, the Sangha has obtained some brown sugar, please enjoy it. He said: This is mixed with food. They also did not enjoy it. Other monks said to them: Venerable ones, the Sangha has obtained some brown sugar, why don't you enjoy it? They said: The teacher said that this is mixed with food. They also did not enjoy it. Most of that large group and the Sangha's stewards did not enjoy it. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught: Food with food (mixed).
