The venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana ordained him. Having ordained him, he caused him to realize the mother and manifest the fruit of non-return. In the border area of a place called Stone City, the Saṅgha of monks was small, and it was difficult to complete the number of ten. Therefore, he kept him as a novice for three months. According to the Dharma, the assembly of the Śrāvakas of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is divided into two: the great assembly is the one that takes place during the summer retreat in the middle of the summer month, and the one that takes place on the fifteenth day of the middle autumn month. Among them, those who assemble for the summer retreat in the middle of the summer month, they grasp and understand the specific aspects of their mindfulness, and then pledge to reside in the villages, cities, towns, districts, and around the royal palaces. Those who assemble on the fifteenth day of the middle autumn month speak of what they have understood and ask questions of their superiors, just like the great Śrāvakas. Then, the monks who lived with the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana, grasping and understanding the specific aspects of their mindfulness, pledged to reside in the villages, cities, towns, districts, and around the royal palaces. After they had spent the three summer months, possessing and wearing their Dharma robes, they took their alms bowls and Dharma robes and went to where the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana and sat down on one side, speaking of what they had understood and asking questions of their superiors. The number of the Saṅgha was also completed to ten, so he gave him full ordination. He realized the three baskets, abandoned all defilements, manifested the Arhat fruit, became an Arhat, and was free from the desire of the three realms, with a mind that was equal to tiles and gold, equal to the sky and the palm of the hand, equal to sandalwood and coarse wood, breaking the shell of the egg of ignorance with wisdom, obtaining wisdom, supernormal powers, and perfect knowledge, and existence.

Turning away from gain, attachment, and reverence. Together with the powerful and near-powerful deities, they became those to be offered to, to be remembered, and to be openly spoken of. Then, the attendant monks, dwelling together with the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana, having approached and revered the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana, spoke thus to the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana: "Venerable sir, we have seen and revered you, may we also revere the Blessed One." "Children, do so! The Tathāgatas, Arhats, perfectly awakened Buddhas are only to be revered." At that time, Jātiya-Karṇīputra gathered and sat within that very mountain cave. Then, the venerable Jātiya-Karṇīputra rose from the rock seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and spoke thus to the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana: "I have seen the venerable sir, and I have seen the Dharma-body of the Blessed One, but I have not seen the Rūpakāya. Venerable sir, you are like the Rūpakāya of the Blessed One." "Children, do so! Seeing the Tathāgata, Arhat, perfectly awakened Buddha is difficult to obtain, like the Udumbara flower. Bow your head at the feet of the Blessed One, and also convey these words of mine, up to 'Is my speech appropriate?' And also convey these five requests. Venerable sir, in the border region called Stone-place, monks are few, and it is difficult to complete the number of ten. How should I accomplish this? Venerable sir, the land is rough from the tracks of cattle, and in the border region called Stone-place, such cushions and coverings are made from sheepskin, cowhide, deerskin, and goatskin. Just as in other places there are such cushions and coverings, such as wool mats, bark mats, silk mats, and cotton mats, so in the border region called Stone-place, such cushions and coverings

It is like this, the rule called "sheepskin" is the same as before. Those who purify themselves with water always use bathing, and if a monk gives a Dharma robe to a monk, if there is no offering from that side, then where does one commit an offense? Please ask. The Venerable Dhanya-born Ear (son) did not speak, but heard from the Venerable Maha-Katyayana. Then, the Venerable Dhanya-born Ear (son) bowed his head to the feet of the Venerable Maha-Katyayana, and then left from the presence of the Venerable Maha-Katyayana. Then, the Venerable Dhanya-born Ear (son), after that night had passed, in the morning, put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robe, and entered the village called Abode to beg for alms. Before long, he gradually reached Shravasti. Then, the Venerable Dhanya-born Ear (son) put down his bowl and Dharma robe, washed his feet, and then went to where the Blessed One was, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down to one side. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and prepare seats for the Tathagata and Dhanya-born Ear (son) in one monastery. The Venerable Ananda, having heard the words of the Blessed One, replied: Yes, Blessed One. Then he prepared seats for the Tathagata and Dhanya-born Ear (son) in one monastery, and then went to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, seats have been prepared for the Tathagata and Dhanya-born Ear (son) in one monastery, Blessed One, now is the time. Then, the Blessed One and Dhanya-born Ear (son) went to where the monastery was, and having arrived, washed their feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, manifested their intention, and sat down. The Venerable Dhanya-born Ear (son) also washed his feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, sat in the lotus position, straightened his body, and focused his mindfulness forward.
