The Blessed One has not permitted it. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Therefore, I now permit you to wear shoes with coverings." When the foolish heretics slandered the Shakyas living in Kapilavastu, some of them fled to the west, and some fled to Nepal. Some merchants from Shravasti arrived in Nepal with goods, and when they saw those people, they said, "Wise ones, where have you come here from?" They said, "From Shravasti. If our relative, the venerable Ananda, were here, he would have come here many times to ask about us." The merchants said, "We will go to the venerable Ananda and inform him." They took the goods they had exchanged and arrived in Shravasti, and then they said to the venerable Ananda, "Venerable Ananda, your relatives are in Nepal, and they wish to see you." The venerable Ananda, longing for his relatives, went to Nepal to see them. When he arrived, his hands and feet were chapped. The monks said to him, "Venerable Ananda, your hands and feet are chapped like torn lotus petals. What has caused this?" He said, "The cold." Why are your relatives wearing shoes with straps? Why don't you wear them? The Blessed One has not permitted it. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Therefore, I now permit you to wear shoes with straps in cold regions." Ananda, where is there a container with ice water? A certain monk, a hunter developed faith in him, and the hunter found a bear skin and offered it to that monk, but he did not accept it. The hunter followed that monk, saying: Holy one, I found a bear skin, I offer it to you, please accept it! The monk did not accept it. The Blessed One also went in that direction, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, do things knowingly, knowing and doing. The Buddha, the Blessed One, asked the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why is the hunter following that monk? Venerable, the hunter found a bear skin, and he gave it to that monk, but the monk did not accept it, and the hunter is following that monk. The Blessed One taught: Ananda, hunters with faith are rare, if you meet a hundred or a thousand, they will all kill. Therefore, if a hunter gives a bear skin, it should be accepted. After accepting it, it can be placed at the door of the bathroom or under the feet, because all bear skins are beneficial to the eyes. Another monk's shoes were broken, and he went to the shoemaker, approached him and said: Good man, my shoes are broken, please sew them for me. The shoemaker thought: The Shakyaputra ascetics, asking without reward, have been delayed for a long time, and their own thoughts will change. Holy one, please come again tomorrow! That monk went to the shoemaker again and again, but he was always delayed. His friend monks saw him and said to him: Venerable one, do you have a house for alms here? Or do you have a house of relatives? He said: I have neither a house for alms nor a house of relatives here, but my shoes are broken, and I asked him to sew them for me, but he always delays. He said: Tell the shoemaker the truth.
