Go forth, you who are endowed! Have you seen anyone going alive into the city of the pretas? As he went, not long after, he saw at the gate of a tall and vast iron city a man who was black and large, with red eyes, an erect penis, and holding a staff in his hand. He went to him and said: O lord of the interior, is there water here? He stood there without saying anything. Again he said to him: O lord of the interior, is there water here? But still he said nothing. Then he entered and uttered the sound "water, water." He saw a preta like a burnt stump, with bones protruding, his own hair and fur disheveled, his belly like a mountain valley, surrounded by hundreds and thousands of mouths as small as the eye of a needle, growing awns, pitiable. He saw an immeasurable palace, and there were four beautiful and lovely goddesses, and one handsome, beautiful, and attractive man, adorned with armlets, earrings, bracelets, unguents, and various garlands, and they were playing together, rejoicing, and enjoying themselves. They saw him from afar, and they each began to say, 'Groma Shen, it is good that you have come!' 'Are you not thirsty? Are you not hungry?' He thought, 'Could they be gods, nagas, or yakshas who do not eat?' So he said, 'I am thirsty, I am hungry.' They bathed him and gave him food, and he stayed in that immeasurable palace until the sun rose. They said to him, 'Groma Shen, misfortune will befall you here, leave!' He left and went straight away. Then one day, when the sun rose, the immeasurable palace and the goddesses disappeared, and four hybrid dogs appeared and knocked the man face down, tearing off pieces of flesh from his back, eating until the sun set. Afterwards, the immeasurable palace reappeared, and the goddesses reappeared, and the handsome, beautiful, and attractive man, adorned with armlets, earrings, bracelets, unguents, and various garlands, and he and they were playing together, rejoicing, and enjoying themselves. He went to them and asked, 'Wise ones, who are you? By what karma were you born here?' Groma Shen said, 'The people of Jambudvipa are hard to believe, so I do not believe.' The wise ones said, 'How can you not believe when I have seen it with my own eyes?' Groma Shen said, 'I used to be a butcher in the village where I lived, slaughtering sheep and selling meat for a living. Then, the great Venerable Katyayana came out of compassion for me and said, 'Good-faced one, the result of this action is unpleasant, so abandon this non-dharma of sin.' But I did not do as he said, and he repeatedly tried to get me to abandon it.
