Having stayed in that place, he recited the Pratimoksha of the Sangha and performed the Uposatha. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks, the Sangha has some business, do not rise for a while." Then, a certain monk rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, in the direction of where the Blessed One was, joined his palms together in utmost reverence and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, if in some place there is a monk who is leprous, suffering, severely leprous, if his purification is accepted, how should we act towards him?" The Blessed One said: "Monk, that monk, for the sake of his own purification, having offered purification, his intention should be accepted." When the Blessed One said that the intention should be accepted, the monks did not know how to accept it. The Blessed One said: "Whether from one person, or from two people, or even from many people, it is acceptable, up to the point where as many names as possible can be spoken within the Sangha." Monks, I shall establish the rules of conduct that a monk offering intention should follow. A monk offering intention should drape his upper robe over one shoulder, remove both shoes, prostrate as if to an elder, squat down, join his palms together, and say thus: "Venerable ones, please listen. Today is the fifteenth Uposatha of the Sangha, and my Uposatha, as a monk who is leprous, suffering, severely leprous, named so-and-so, is also the fifteenth. I, as a monk who is leprous, suffering, severely leprous, named so-and-so, am purified of the obstructing dharmas. I offer my intention to the Sangha to act according to the Dharma. My Uposatha is also purified. The intention and the purification are also spoken. The speaking is also understood." In this way, repeat it twice or three times. A monk offering intention, if he offers intention by means of bodily expression, it should be said that the intention has been offered. If he offers intention by means of verbal expression, it should be said that the intention has been offered.

If the intention is presented through bodily expression and verbal expression, it should be said that the intention has been presented. If the bodily expression does not present it, and the verbal expression does not present it either, then all the Sangha should go there. Or that Bhikshu should be accepted into the Sangha. If all the Sangha do not go there, or if that Bhikshu is not accepted into the Sangha, and there is disharmony, it will constitute a grave offense. When a Bhikshu presents an intention, if he does not properly accept and observe all the prescribed conduct, it will constitute a grave offense. Bhikshus, I shall prescribe the conduct for a Bhikshu accepting an intention: After accepting the intention, a Bhikshu should not run, should not walk quickly, should not jump, should not jump outwards, should not jump into a pit, should not jump onto a platform, should not sit in the air above, should not go outside the boundary, should not climb two steps of a staircase with one step, should not climb two rungs of a ladder with one step, should not swim in water that covers the armpits, should not sleep, should not enter into Samadhi. Causing sleep and entering into Samadhi are two things that should be blamed, namely shamelessness and unlearnedness. When the elder of the Sangha says, "Venerable ones, please state the intention and purity of those who have not arrived, and please understand what is being said," he should sit in front of the Bhikshu who is present and say this: "Venerable ones, please listen. Today the Sangha is holding the fifteenth-day Uposatha. In such and such a place, a Bhikshu named so-and-so is sick, suffering, and seriously ill, and his Uposatha is also on the fifteenth day. In such and such a place, a Bhikshu named so-and-so is sick, suffering, and seriously ill, and he says that his obstructive Dharmas are completely purified. That is all.

I offer my intention to the work. Its Uposatha is also completely pure. Intention and complete purity are also declared. The declaration is also witnessed. Thus, repeat it two or three times. Or, in the middle of the Sangha, standing behind the elder, with reverence, one should say this: Venerable Sangha, please listen. Today is the fifteenth day of the Sangha's Uposatha. In a certain place, a bhikkhu who is sick, suffering, and seriously ill, whose name is so-and-so, his Uposatha is also the fifteenth day. In a certain place, a bhikkhu who is sick, suffering, and seriously ill, whose name is so-and-so, all his obstructive dharmas are completely purified, only this is the case. I offer my intention to the Sangha's lawful actions. Its Uposatha is also completely pure. Intention and complete purity are also declared. The declaration is also witnessed. If a bhikkhu who takes intention does not properly take and engage in all the prescribed dharmas, he will commit a serious offense. The Venerable Ananda asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, if a bhikkhu takes intention and complete purity, and having taken intention and complete purity, immediately ceases and dies, should it be said that he has taken intention and complete purity? Or should it be said that he has not taken it? Ananda, he has not taken it, it should be taken again. If one falsely claims to be a householder? A novice? A woman? A eunuch? A nun who has been expelled? A mother-killer? A father-killer? An Arhat-killer? A divider of the Sangha? One who has maliciously drawn blood from the Tathagata? A heretic? One who has entered heresy? One who lives by theft? One who lives separately? If one falsely claims to be in a non-abiding place, should it be said that he has taken intention and complete purity? Or should it be said that he has not taken it? Ananda, he has not taken it, it should be taken again. Venerable, if a bhikkhu takes intention and complete purity, and having taken intention and complete purity, afterwards ceases and dies, should it be said that intention and complete
