and to be worshiped, to be remembered, and to be manifestly spoken of by the gods with their retinues. He (referring to Maudgalyayana) said to them: Wise ones, seize the edge of my Dharma robe, and I shall go by my magical power. They seized the edge of his Dharma robe, and then, the venerable Maudgalyayana, like a king of birds spreading its wings, ascended into the sky above by his magical power. When those five hundred merchants were unloading their goods, they saw him, and they said: Venerable Maudgalyayana, have you come? It is good that you have come! I have come. Where are you going? He said: These five hundred good men wish to go forth and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya in the presence of the Blessed One, desiring to become monks, so they are going to the presence of the Blessed One. They said: Venerable Maudgalyayana, please allow us to go forth as well, and please wait a moment until we have unloaded our goods. The venerable Maudgalyayana descended, and they unloaded their goods. Then, he led those thousand good men to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One was sitting in the midst of a retinue of many hundreds of monks, teaching the Dharma. The Blessed One saw the venerable Maudgalyayana coming from afar with gifts and baggage. Having seen him, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, do you see the monk Maudgalyayana coming from afar? Yes, venerable one, we see him. Monks, this monk Maudgalyayana comes to the Tathagata with gifts, and the gift of the Tathagata is like nothing other than taming. Then, the venerable Maudgalyayana went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the two feet of the Blessed One, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Maudgalyayana said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, these thousand good men wish to go forth and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, becoming monks.

O, I beseech you. World Honored One, for the sake of compassion, please allow these to be ordained. Please let them receive the full ordination. The World Honored One ordained them with the words, "Come, monks," and taught, "Monks, come, practice pure conduct." At the very end of the World Honored One's teaching, they shaved their heads and wore robes. Their hair and beard grew for only seven days, and they held a bowl and water bottle in their hands, behaving like monks who had received full ordination for a hundred years. It is also said: The Thus Come One taught with "Come," possessing a body with shaved hair and wearing robes, instantly the senses became completely peaceful, and the body's form was covered by the Buddha's intention. Then, the World Honored One gave them instructions, and through diligence, effort, and exertion, they abandoned all afflictions and realized the state of Arhat. Arhats are free from desire in the three realms, with minds that equate tiles and gold, the sky and the palm of the hand, sandalwood and axes, wisdom like breaking an eggshell, and they have attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge. They turn their backs on existence, the gains of desire, and respect, and are worshiped, remembered, and openly praised by gods, including deities and attendants. Then, the Venerable Sangharakshita asked the Buddha, the World Honored One: Venerable, here I see beings like walls, like pillars, like trees, like leaves, like flowers, like fruits, like ropes, like brooms, like bowls, like mortars, like pestles, with their waists broken and held by aquatic plants. Venerable, what deeds did those beings commit, that the ripening of karma caused them to become like that? The World Honored One taught: Sangharakshita, those beings themselves created accumulated karma, completely changed the conditions, approached like light, and will not be devoured by ghosts in the future.

Because of accumulation, who else will experience the deeds done and accumulated by themselves? Sangharakshita, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, will not mature in the realm of water, will not mature in the realm of fire, will not mature in the realm of wind. Like this, the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Deeds, even after hundreds of kalpas, Will not be wasted, nor will they lose their time. When causes and conditions meet, Sentient beings will receive their own karmic results. Sangharakshita, in the past, in the bygone era, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings could reach twenty thousand years, the teacher, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the knower of the world, the tamer of beings, the unsurpassed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. When he was dwelling near the Deer Park at the Isipatana in Varanasi, they became his Shravakas. Sangharakshita, those beings you see that resemble walls, they were once monks who defiled the walls of the Sangha with saliva, and due to the maturation of that karma, they became beings resembling walls. Those beings you see that resemble pillars, they were also once monks who defiled the pillars of the Sangha with snot, and due to the maturation of that karma, they became beings resembling pillars. Those beings you see that resemble trees, leaves, flowers, and fruits, they were also once monks who used the trees, leaves, flowers, and fruits of the Sangha for personal enjoyment, and due to the maturation of that karma, they became beings resembling trees, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Those beings you see that resemble ropes, and those that resemble brooms, they were also once monks who used the ropes and brooms of the Sangha for personal enjoyment.
