Once there was a householder who had a skilled servant, neither lazy nor incompetent, who was always ahead in all urgent matters. One day, he scolded the servant, and the servant thought: 'This master is difficult to please, I cannot satisfy him, I might as well run away.' Then he thought: 'Leaving home is difficult, I should rather become a renunciate among these monks, sons of the Shakya, who have obtained permission from the king to renounce their youth.' So he went to the Jeta Grove, approached the monks, and said: 'Venerable ones, I wish to become a renunciate.' They ordained him and gave him the full ordination, and after two or three days, they taught him the commonly practiced precepts and said: 'Good sir, a deer does not long for another deer. Shravasti is vast, it is both your domain and your father's land, go and live by begging for alms.' The householder felt remorse and thought: 'He was always ahead of me in all urgent matters, why did I scold him?' He thought: 'If I could see him now, I would ask for his forgiveness.' So he waited at the gate of Shravasti. The monk also, early in the morning, put on his robes, took his bowl and religious garment, and went to Shravasti to beg for alms. The householder saw him and said: 'Good sir, if you have become a renunciate, who will serve me? Come back, come!' He stretched out his hand and tried to grab his two hands. The monk said: 'The king has granted us permission to renounce our youth, and if you touch me, your hand will be cut off at the wrist.' The conduct of the monks, sons of the Shakya, is truly disgusting! The conduct of the Brahmins is also disgusting! To even ordain a slave, it is shameful!' They blamed each other, attacked each other, and cursed each other. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought: 'Whatever fault has occurred, it is because the monks have allowed a slave to become a renunciate.' Therefore, he taught: 'Therefore, a monk should not ordain a slave.'
