When gathering there, regarding the faults of the past half-month, one should restrain, one should confess, and one should bless. One should examine these individually, and if one knows of faults, one should rectify them through restraint, confession, or blessing, and then abide. After that, all the Sangha should gather and be in harmony, or those of the mandala are also acceptable. In the central region, a Sangha consisting of ten Bhikshus, etc., or in remote regions, if there are no others, a Sangha consisting of a Vinaya holder and five Bhikshus, etc., is also acceptable. First, have them prostrate to the teacher. After that, have each Bhikshu prostrate three times. There are two types of prostration: prostration with the five limbs and bending from the knees. Either is acceptable here. This is what should be done at the beginning. After that, one should request the Upadhyaya (Preceptor). One should request in this way: After having the (novice) prostrate to the Upadhyaya, have him sit squatting in front on a seat with grass spread on it, pressing down with both heels. Then, have him join his palms. If (the one being requested) is an Upadhyaya, one should say "Upadhyaya." If he is an Acharya, one should say "Acharya." If he is a venerable one, one should say "Venerable One" as appropriate. After teaching this, he should say these words: "Venerable One, please listen. I, who am called by this name, request the Venerable One to be my Upadhyaya. Venerable One, please be my Upadhyaya. Venerable One, I will attain full ordination through the Upadhyaya." Repeat this twice or three times in the same way. On the third repetition, one should say "Upadhyaya." The Upadhyaya should say, "It is possible." The disciple should say, "Good." This is the request for the Upadhyaya. After that, the Upadhyaya himself should bless the three Dharma robes for him. If there are Dharma robes that have been cut and sewn for some time, that is good. One should bless them in this way: Examine the three Dharma robes separately, then place them on the disciple's left shoulder, both standing. Holding the patchwork of the Dharma robes with his hand, he should say these words: "Venerable One, please listen. I, who am called by this name, bless this Dharma robe that has been made, is suitable for use, as a patchwork of Dharma robes." Repeat this twice or three times in the same way.
