No. What are the two Khenpos? The one who causes to renounce, and the one who causes to take full ordination. The Blessed One taught that the Khenpos and scholars should cause to renounce and take full ordination. The monks did not know how to cause to renounce and how to take full ordination, so the Blessed One taught: If someone wants to renounce at someone's place, then that person should ask them about the obstacles and take them in. After taking them in, take refuge in the Three Jewels, and by vowing to be a layperson, give the lay vows. This is how it should be given: First, have them prostrate to the teacher. After that, have them prostrate to the scholar, and have them sit squatting in front. Have them join their palms, and have them say this: Venerable, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time onwards, until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the best of the two-legged. I take refuge in the Dharma, the best of those free from attachment. I take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies. I, until the end of my life, ask the venerable to take me as a layperson. Repeat this twice or three times. On the third time, say 'scholar'. The scholar should say: 'It is a means.' The layperson should say: 'Good.' This is giving the lay vows. After that, the precepts should be declared in the manner of making a promise. This is how it should be done: Scholar, please listen. Just as those noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, abandoned killing and turned away from killing, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time onwards, until the end of my life, abandon killing and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I follow the training of those noble Arhats. I follow, I accomplish, I do. Furthermore, just as those noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, do not take what is not given, do not engage in sexual misconduct, and do not

Having abandoned the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating with liquor and grain wine and concocted wine, likewise, having abandoned the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating with liquor and grain wine and concocted wine, I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until the end of my life, abandon taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct, lying, and the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating with liquor and grain wine and concocted wine, abandon the place of heedlessness which is intoxicating with liquor and grain wine and concocted wine and return. With this fifth branch, I will follow the training of those noble Arhats, I will practice, I will do. The teacher should say, "It is a means." The layman should say, "Good." The ritual for becoming a lay follower is complete. After that, it should be entrusted to the monk who is making the request for it. The requesting monk should ask the abbot, "Have you asked about the obstructive dharmas?" If he makes the request without asking, it will become a serious offense. After that, the requesting monk should make the request. It should be requested in this way: after arranging the place, striking the bell, and admonishing the monks with the words of the question, whether the entire Sangha is assembled and in harmony, or whether they are dwelling in their individual dwellings, having the elders pay homage, having them squat, having them join their palms, and then making the request, one should say this: "Venerable Sangha, please listen. This person, named so-and-so, desires to be ordained by the abbot, named so-and-so, desiring to be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, having abandoned the white-clothed householder's life, without having shaved his hair and beard. This person, named so-and-so, desires to be ordained, having shaved his hair and beard, having donned the saffron robes, and with only true faith, from home to homelessness, is being ordained by the abbot, named so-and-so. He himself says that he is completely purified of the obstructive dharmas. Should he be ordained? All of them should say, 'If he is completely purified.'" If they say that,

That is very good. If it is not said like that, it will become a serious fault. This is the ritual of requesting ordination (to become a monk). Next is the request to the Khenpo. It should be requested like this: have (the one requesting ordination) prostrate to the Khenpo, and then have him squat in front of the Khenpo. Have him join his palms, and then have him say this: "Teacher, please listen. I, named [so and so], request you, teacher, to be my Khenpo. Please, teacher, be my Khenpo. Please, Khenpo teacher, ordain me." Repeat this twice, three times. In the third sentence, say "Khenpo." The Khenpo should say, "It is possible to do so." The one who wants to be ordained should say, "Very good." This is the ritual of requesting the Khenpo. Next, entrust a monk to shave his hair and beard. When he shaves all the hair and beard, the Blessed One said: Do not shave it all off, but keep a topknot like this, and then ask him whether to shave the topknot. If he says, "Do not shave it," then say, "Then go." If he says, "Shave it off," then shave it off. After that, have him take a bath. If it is the cold season, have him take a bath with warm water. If it is the hot season, have him take a bath with cold water. After that, the Khenpo should give him a begging bowl and monastic robes, and he should prostrate with both feet and receive them. After that, the Khenpo should dress him in the robes and check whether he is a eunuch, a hermaphrodite, or an impotent person. The Blessed One said, "It should be checked." When the monks stripped him naked to check, he was ashamed, so the Blessed One said: Do not strip him naked to check, but check by touching when he is wearing the lower garment. This is the first thing to do. Next, the ordination should be completed by beginning to take refuge. It should be completed in this way: first, have him prostrate to the teacher. After that, have him prostrate to the Khenpo, and then have him squat in front of the Khenpo.
