If one practices celibacy for as long as the life of the departed, perfectly complete Buddha, the supreme abode of merit, Light Protector (Buddha's name), one will not obtain any accumulation of merit. With this root of virtue from practicing celibacy for as long as my life, may the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, say to the Brahmin boy: "Brahmin boy, in the future, when beings live to be a hundred years old, you will become the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed guide of beings, teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha Bhagavan Shakyamuni." May I, having renounced in that teaching, abandon all defilements and realize the state of Arhat. Just as this preceptor was shown by the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, to be the foremost among those with great wisdom and those with great fearlessness, may I also be shown by the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, the Lion of the Shakyas, the King of the Shakyas, the chief, to be the foremost among those with great wisdom and those with great fearlessness. Thus, having begun to pray, by the power of that prayer, the Tathagata has now shown me to be the foremost among those with great wisdom and those with great fearlessness. Furthermore, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha Bhagavan: "Venerable one, what deeds did the venerable Maudgalyayana's son do, that by the ripening of those deeds, he became great in miraculous powers and great in strength?" The Bhagavan replied: "Monks, Maudgalyayana's son himself accumulated the causes for obtaining the results of actions, transformed the conditions, and abiding like a lamp, it will surely arise without delay. How could others experience the deeds done and accumulated by Maudgalyayana's son himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated do not ripen in the external earth element, nor do they ripen in the water element, nor do they ripen in the fire element, nor do they ripen in the wind element.

Thus, virtuous and non-virtuous actions, having been done and accumulated, will ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sources that have been taken. Actions, even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, will not be lost. When the time of meeting with various conditions arrives, sentient beings will surely receive their fruits. Furthermore, Not even after hundreds of eons, Are actions lost, when the conditions and time Are ripe, then to embodied beings, They will ripen into their fruit. Monks, in the past, not far from the city of Varanasi, in a certain hermitage, there lived a hermit who was the embodiment of loving-kindness, full of compassion, and loving towards all sentient beings. Once, a poor man, carrying a load of wood, went to that hermitage, put down the load of wood, and rested. The hermit saw him and felt compassion for him, thinking: 'This afflicted one was born as a human being due to the misdeeds of past actions, yet he strives with great effort to make a living. I shall ordain him.' So he said, 'Boy, who are you?' He said, 'Venerable one, I am a poor man who makes a living by selling wood.' The hermit said, 'Boy, then why don't you become ordained?' He said, 'Venerable one, I am a poor man who sells wood to make a living with great difficulty. Who would ordain me?' Then, the hermit, being the embodiment of loving-kindness, felt great compassion and said to him, 'Boy, do you want to be ordained?' He said, 'Venerable one, I wish to be ordained. Please, out of your loving-kindness, ordain me.' The hermit ordained him, washed and dyed his begging bowl and robes, and gave them to him, saying, 'Good sir, if you gain even a little bit of qualities, tell me.' He promised him, 'I will do so.' He went to a solitary place, and without a preceptor or teacher, he cultivated the thirty-seven dharmas that are in harmony with enlightenment and realized self-enlightenment. He thought, 'I made a promise to that hermit, so I will go and show myself to him.' Those great beings teach the Dharma with their bodies, not with words. Therefore, out of compassion for him, he appeared in the sky above like a king of geese spreading its wings.
